Fairchild 412 with MicroTrak tonearm... IT LIVES!

Took quite an assemblage of parts to make this one work. Our Fairchild 412, mhardy's MicroTrak tonearm, Johncan's Grado mono cart, plus some custom parts fabrication. Turned out pretty good, if I say so myself.

Basically, I slotted out the tonearm mounting holes in the plinth (to allow moving the tonearm base to a better location) and created a cartridge mount/spacer to move the cartridge forward... and in doing so, managed to achieve PERFECT ALIGNMENT of the cartridge in the EXACT right location and in ALL THREE DIMENSIONAL ANGLES (overhang location, tracking angle, VTA and roll angle).

I also created a quick arm rest, out of a strip of brass. Not too many pre-fab arm mounts that work with those MicroTrak/Gray rectangular-section arm wands... but this one does the job.

Looks pretty "period" for the time, doesn't it?

This whole assemblage will be heading to its new home, at Johncan's house, very soon!

(note: I apologize for the slightly fuzzy pic... only have the old crappy camera available today...)

looks good to me gotta love that fairchild gear:D .i'm sure john will like it.

getting ready for that mono setup john?:scratch2: by any chance will that be hooked to a mc30:scratch2:

It will be connected to a Heathkit mono block amp until the MC30 arrives from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The preamp is a McIntosh C-8. This will be a very nice mono set-up.

Gordon you are an amazing man, but a terrible photographer! ;-) (just kidding)

Glad to see that arm put to some use. It seemed too cool to consign to a landfill...

Gordon did an excellent job! I am playing Johnny Cash in mono as I type. Also thanks for Mark for the tonearm!

You're very welcome -- glad to see it get some use!
Wonder if a little Mother's Mag Polish will spruce up the headshell a bit...

WAY COOL! I have one of those 412-1s as well. I wonder which is older, the ones with a more 'ordinary' center post, or ones like this one? (The motor on mine is German made, with the date 6 December 1957 stamped on the outer rotor. What's the date on the one on this one in the pix?) I only had to replace a belt on mine a few months ago....it was running on BOTH its originals until then! The only thing that sucks though, is the Shure M216 arm/cartridge combo mounted on it.

Has anyone ever built the tube oscillator/power amp used to power the 412-4, with the idea of converting a single-speed model into a 4 speed one? I'm curious....

That Esquivel LP is a helluva record in mono too. I have it also, but not as nice as this copy. Great mix with well-extended response (particularly in the bass).
