Pioneer SX-1250???

Turntable Addict
I had a guy call me to night offering a Pioneer SX-1250 for sale. He said he took it in to have it cleaned and deoxited and the tech said it needed a recap. He doesn't want to stick any more into it so he said I can have it for $350. I cant recap it myself, so I would have to have it done. I don't need a 1250 as I have a 1980 so my only interest in it is to flip it. Is it worth the $350, to me?
If not, maybe someone in the WI/IL area can buy it and recap it themselves and have a great receiver. I'm open to either option.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

If the unit is complete and original with cosmetic condition near mint, the answer is maybe. If not, that's too much for a starting point. The best you can come out $ wise is about even. I'm all about saving 1250s but caution is warranted here.

That's what I figured. Well if anyone is interested, PM me and Ill steer you in the right direction to a 1250.

I guess it's not clear to me whether the tech indicated that it needed a recap to work properly or if he was advising the owner that it 'needed' a recap as does any electronic item after 35+ years. If the receiver looks good and is operable after a cleaning and deoxit treatment, it is easily worth $600. IMHO

There are 18 sold listings of $900 up to $1500. You could buy a very nice cosmetic 1250 for $350, pay for repair and make money. :smoke:

I looked at ebay and that's what excited me. I guess I need to find out more info. If it "needs" a recap or if it just should be because of its age.
Ill keep this post updated as I know more.

What "need a re-cap" means? The question is - Does SX-1250 works or not?
And more important, what is cosmetic?

Ok, I talked to the guy again tonight. He said all it gets is a static, and he took it to a tech and they said the 4 big caps need replacing. I probably am not going to take it, but I have a few AKer's waiting in line to get the info. He is supposed to send me some pics tonight so I am on hold until I get the pics. He said the face is in excellent shape, and there are a few dings on the wooden case.
Someone out there is going to get a 1250 for a decent price, if they are willing to do the work on it. I'm just glad he called so I can pass it on to an AK member. Would hate to see him part it out.
More to come as I know more. :thmbsp:

I want to know where some of you guys are buying your gear? $350 is a downright steal in my area, working or not.

OK, No. 1 in line passed so I am passing info on to No. 2. But in the meantime, here are some pictures.

Not perfect, but wood scratches can be covered up fairly well. He said all lamps work. Ill keep updating as I know more.

Shrug. I passed on this one. Doesn't work, looks chewed up. What do you do with it? It's not worth parting out, plus you don't know how much of it works, and the cosmetic stuff means you can't get much for a lot of the parts. It needs a full electrical rebuild, but once that's done you have a perfectly working ugly receiver. So then you track down a new faceplate, etc. Eventually you've spent way too much money on it. I'm sure it would ebay for more than $350, but I had no problem passing on it.

This is still available to anyone that may be local. He wants an outrageous price to ship it, so it needs to be a pickup only. PM me if you are interested.

He wanted $150-175 to ship it from Rockford, IL to NJ? Then you have over $500 into it, plus you need a recap. That's way too much. Looks like he might be using it as a doorstop for a while.

350 for the 1250, 150 to ship, 150 for new filter caps, 100 for capacitors, diodes and transistors, and lots of time invested.

I totally agree. I was just hoping someone could come out ahead on this deal, but its not looking good at all.
Oh well, I tried. Too bad it couldn't work out.
Another one bites the dust.
