John in MA's system, or "how to have more speaker than listening room"

John in MA

Finally got around to making this thread. What happens when you have a tiny listening room but pick up some big speakers before you're ready? This, pretty much. You're essentially looking at Polks-as-headphones.

Totally unsuitable for the space, but I plan on keeping this stuff for a long time, and there's no sense in not using it. Might put some little ADS monitors in there somewhere for quiet time.

Polk SDA-SRS 1.2TL
Technics SL-1200 Mk. II
Pioneer TX-9500/II
McIntosh C712
Kinergetics KCD-40 Platinum
Nakamichi LX-3
Rotel RB-990BX
Realistic power level meter
AKG K-340 headphones
Salamander composite rack
Way too much Jefferson Airplane

(Always keep the grilles on for listening--makes for a hell of a photo when you take them off.)

I had that problem. Came across a couple mid 50's Klipschorns .... one in 1999 and the other in 2000. Didn't really have the room for them but the deal was right. So, they moved into my garage.

In Dec 2006 we began our home addition project. By Feb. 2009 the new (much larger) family room was finished enough for them to move into the house. They're quite happy there now.

Patience.....:thmbsp:

I have the big speaker in small room syndrome, too. But, honestly, I'd rather have big AWESOME speakers than smaller OK speakers. I am going to move into a house in the next couple years so I'm willing to be patient, even if it means having huge ass transmission lines that piss my neighbors off in my apartment! I just have to listen to them at low volumes. :)

IMO, much better than getting smaller speakers to compromise. This compromise to me makes more sense in the long run.

Here's hoping you get to hear those big polks set up in a proper room someday. Wow talk about overpowering a room. That certainly is one fine looking set up that you have there though.

Um.... Yeah.. cool speakers, but did no one see all the gear that fell? DAMN.. that REALLY sucks John..

Now would be the time to mention who helped you move those monster speakers into your house! My back is still outta whack. Seriously, that looks pretty nice, John. I'd love to hear you crank some Jefferson Airplane on that set-up!

Yes, Urchinn was stu...kind enough to help me lug those things upstairs. But he complains too much--they're only 185 pounds each.

Is it the lighting or am I seeing rdo tweeters on the left side and silver coils on the right speaker?

Just the lighting. They're SL-3000s all around.

been there, I had cornwalls for a while that were about 2.5 feet apart

agree with the poster w/ the khorns who held onto them. I sold some once that I got at a good price and sometimes in this hobby it seems like the universe brings you gifts and you can't take them for granted as you may not see them at a decent price ever again.

beautiful speakers, what do you clean them with? meticulous setup...very nice

I'm with you!

La Scalas in a 12x12 room. About five feet between 'em, and about 5 feet to the listening spot.

Enjoy those monsters, they must sound fantastic.

Awwesoomme. Did the McIntosh glass have a crack in it before being sandwiched between shelving and components?
