Just got my Realistic STA-2100 restored!

Victory is mine!
Okay, this receiver showed up on my local CL a couple months ago....got it home, turned it on and everything worked except ALL lighting! :tears: The case was beat up, dusty inside BUT it was complete! :) I put it in the closet as I had some other projects going... I decided a couple weeks ago to tackle it! I took it to a tech/friend of mine who repaired the lighting in exchange for another amp that needed repairs. I then tackled the case, which needed some corners rebuilt with wood filler. There were also some other voids filled and then it was sanded (carefully, the veneer is thin on the narrow edges!) Five coats of natural high gloss tung oil with light, fine sanding in between and then finished with a paste wax. It looks great! Not perfect, but very sharp! I hooked it up to my Mach 2's in my shop and blasted away....what awesome power from an RS receiver! It's bass heavy, which is perfect for my rock music listening! So, I spent $75 on the reciver, $5 for refinish supplies, and $0 for repairs. I figure it could command $250 or so on ebay, since mint ones eclipse the $300 mark! So now I just need to find a place for it. :scratch2: No way I am selling it! This is Radio Shack's finest from their golden era! BTW - I asked the woman I bought it from if the lights worked and she said "Oh yeah!" It was obvious previous repairs were done on the lighting and the way it was wired when I got it was completely wrong. In fact the bulbs have very low miles on them if any, so I don't think the lighting has worked on this receiver for many years! She probably thinks she really took me on the transaction...

I am really beginning to envy owners of these receivers. I want one but I just cant seem to find them in my area. Guess the Radio Shack in my city didn't sell to many. I will eventually find one though.

Enjoy your receiver it looks darn fine. :thmbsp:

I have this reciever's little brother 75 watter. Very strong bass, good rock amp, looks like a cross between a Pioneer and a Sansui.

I wish my digital camera took better pics... The green glow of the meters is simply stunning!

Dark room, tripod, no flash. Maybe a bit of subtle ambient light....

I have the little brother to it, the STA-2000D. I bought it new in 1979 and it still sounds great! Jumpers? Try some bent wire.

:headscrat :headscrat What type of veneer did you use for this? Just interested cause I need to do the same with a Yamaha receiver I have.

I didn't reveneer.... It had some chips, edge wear, etc and I used wood filler... I was thinking of a reveneer but the unit itself isn't mint enough to warrant that kid of effort. (Wow! Did I just say that? I've always been Mr. Overkill!)

The "D" at the end of the model number means built in Korea. The non-D models were built in Japan.

The STA-2100 and the Mach Two had to be made for each other. I always have really liked the sound & performance of my Mach Two--I really need to do a rotation of my vintage system and use some other of my gear.
