Did you see this thing you-know-where?

Sears-brand receiver... never saw anything quite like it. Looks like a chimera of several 1970's brands (most notably Yamaha), but with some touches all of its own!

My standard auction disclaimer applies...

A few days ago I posted this little piece of information I found about the Sears brand name. I think it might apply in this case as well.

Sears, Roebuck & Co.
USA based mail order house, it's still in operation and I believe still selling audio equipment, but was in the 50's and 60's one of the biggest if not the biggest seller of home audio gear in America and much of that was sold under their own Sears and Silvertone brands although invariably sourced from North American and Japanese OEM producers. The company is also the current owner of the Eaton's and Viking brands in Canada.

It was made by AGS, or at least imported by them, that much I know. Audio Reflex was a brand name AGS put on stuff if I recall. There are several versions of it that I have seen, the coolest of which was the black one with the script font dial but with the Sears logo. The biggest (if there are variations, unless they are all cosmetic restylings of the same thing) is 40lbs and about 100wpc. There is also a good looking integrated amplifier in this Sears professional stuff which I believe was produced by the same producer of this receiver. I've wanted one of these for a while but they all seem to start at this same price range for whatever reasion.

this is the second time it's been listed,i know this because i almost bought it the first time around but at $99 i decided to pass .i had one of these when then first came out(it was my actually my first introduction into the audio hobby and my first stereo setup.)i've always said if one ever came up for auction id buy it if even just for the sedimental value as i really cant recall what it sounded like but for a 16yr old at the time when i owned one it sounded darn good to my ears.

That is too cool looking. It looks like a cross between a Yamaha xx20 series and a B and O Beomaster 1500.If an Aker gets it,Id love to hear how it sounds.

Or at least the "bastard" child of a Yamaha/B&O one night stand.

Thanks for posting the excellent photos of this thing, twocoaster. Gotta love the lighted scales on the sliders! Would've made a nice 'head unit' for a car stereo, wouldn't it?

I am strangely (perversely) fascinated by this receiver...

And on what other audio forum are you gonna read words like "chimera", that's what I wanna know.

What intrigues me is of course the mention of MOS-FET components inside, even though I suspect they're referring to the front end of the tuner and not the power stage of the amp. Does anyone know the details?

And what's "AGS"?

Love that Marantz/JVC thumbwheel. Pioneer if I remember had a receiver in the late '60s with reverb. Heck this thing has something for everyone. Maybe we should buy it as a group and split it up amongst each.

Don't quote me on it but I believe AGS stands for American General Supply and was an importer of electronic goods in Canada.

ya think so brian ? so which part do you want? by the way is this coming from the same brian thats a proponent of "lets not butcher gear and leave it as it were" or are your values changing ? :D .all kidding aside im still thinking of buying it and try to relive some of my mispent youth.the thing is im kinda short on funds perhaps there is something i have that you might be interested in purchasing from me .id really like to preserve this piece of history and save it from the landfill where i feel it'll land up going if it does'nt sell this time around.please feel fre to pm me if you can help me out.
