Phase Linear 3's

"Vintage Phase Linear", sounds redundant doesn't it? :stupid: Kind of like vintage model-T. Well, DUH!!! (slaps self on forehead)

THE FINAL SYSTEM WAS MADE UP OF TWO LARGE,24"X63"X5"SPEAKER PANELS, A SUDWOOFER MODULE AND AN ELECTRONIC MOTION CONTROL SYSTEM

Heh. I need a sudwoofer module. Anyone know where I can get one? :D

I believe SpeakerLabFan has a set of them.

Yes! I scored a pair of these speakers on local Craigslist last year, I have them in my living room system and driving them with Carver separates, and I am "enthralled" by these speakers, every listening session is like bringing the band into my house.

Here's the thread when I picked 'em up: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=116621

I have also been watching this auction. I can do without the all-caps and typos in the description but some interesting text on the history of these speakers:

PHASE LINEAR HISTORY WITH THE SUCCESS OF PHASE LINEAR'S AMPLIFIERS AND PRE-AMPLIFIERS AND AFTER THE MOVE TO THE COMPANY'S NEW BUILDING IN LYNNWOOD WASHINGTON IN 1974 BOB CARVER WANTED TO DESIGN A STEREO SPEAKER SYSTEM THAT,AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE,REPRODUCED THE ACTUAL LISTENING EXPERIENCE OF LISTENING TO LIVE MUSIC.CARVER HAD DEVOTED A GREAT DEAL OF THOUGHT AS TO WHY LIVE MUSIC SOUNDED THE WAY IT DID,AND HOW REPRODUCED MUSIC FAILED HAD DUPLICATE THE LIVE LISTENING ENVIRONMENT. LIVE MUSIC PLAYED IN A CONCERT HALL WAS THE AMBIANCE CARVER WANTED TO ACHIEVE. AFTER MOUNTHS OF ENGINEERING AND PROTOTYPES'CARVER FELT HE HAD REACHED HIS GOAL.

Well, that somebody is gonna have a tough time sneaking those past his very loving and understanding wife...

They went to a local AK'er, and having seen his pile of gear, he is gonna have to clear out some gear to make a spot for them!

He was doing so well... He had finally fixed the big Pioneer SX and got it off of the dining room table, much to the delight of the afore mentioned wife!

I fear there is no hope for his audio addiction... Oh well, at least I will get to audition them!

Excellent news! (...that these are going to an AK'r, not that it's going to be tough getting them in the house :D ) I'm looking forward to your impressions on these after an audition.

He will have to re-home a bunch of stuff just to make a spot to put them for now... I suggested subscribing, and using bartertown. I told him I would watch his EV Sentry III's for him for awhile, if he needed some room!

I thought I'd share some comments on these speakers. I don't have alot of critical speaker listening experience compared to others including others who commented in earlier threads on these speakers, but what I've heard put these Andromedas at the top of my list. I wouldn't be surprised to prefer them over an expensive new pair of speakers like Martin Logans (which I've heard in another guy's rig).

They fill a room with sound, the entire room is a sweet spot, and I haven't had to do much with placement of the panels in my living room but I suspect the bigger the room, the better.

I A/B'd the Andromedas in my living room with a pair of Magnaplanar MG1's (which are similar in some ways since they are panels and not very directional or efficient) and the Andromedas blew them out of the water, no contest. Same with a pair of Klipsch Fortes where you could really hear the short comings of a sealed box acoustic suspension speaker compared to the Andromedas. But of course some of the results I'm hearing might be because the room might be a better match for the Andromedas than other speakers.

I have a pair of Khorns in my basement - the Andromedas would beat them if I could move them upstairs to A/B them. The Khorns would certainly be louder, but the Andromedas are just totally concert-real. :thmbsp::music:
