Military Thrift Shop Scores

A potentially overlooked gold mine can be "mil-spec" thrift shops as well as Base newspapers. If you have access to a military base, keep an eye on both. Having spent some time(OK,OK, two decades) at Minot AFB, ND, I can vouch for this. My garage stereo almost totally consists of deals. The receiver is an '81 Technics SA-818 that was $50 @ten years ago. This blows away the Kenwood KVR-970B in the house that I brought from Korea in '83. The speakers are two dumpster dived(dove?)Pioneer CS-9000's scored outside a base dorm dumpster and rewoofered, plus two Altec-Lansing Seven Series II from the thrift shop for @$10 and refoamed (rubbered?) the woofers. The Sevens came in their original boxes as did the Pioneer PL-530 turntable ($7.50) and the SX-980 rcvr ($15) The boxed stuff was labeled for the original owner who'd bought them as a cadet at the Air Force Academy in '77. The last two will be the basement system and the $20 Kenwood KR-7050 is headed to the barn paired with some old JC Penney speakers to keep the varmints out.:D The garage system also has an old Kenwood cassette deck, Magnavox CD player and a Sylvania VHS deck hooked to it with a $4 19" tv so I can watch movies whilst I work on the vehicles. Or just make my eardrums meet in the middle if I want. The wife does object if she can hear it in the house over her tv, but the house is 100 feet away! And the nearest neighbors are a mile. The best scores were last spring. An ad in the base paper said JBL L100 speakers, 3ft tall , very loud, some chips, $50. I called, I saw, I didn't bargain! The timing was perfect as I'd just noticed some buzzing coming from one of my Pioneer HPM-900 speakers' woofer. I'd brought these back from Turkey in '81. The foam was toast. Jeez! You'd think they'd make stuff last longer than 22 years;) Wow! These JBLs are SOME speakers! I remember being awed in '83 at the Osan BX by some JBL L112s and thinking they were SO far out of my price range it wasn't funny. And now... The guy I bought the L100S's from bought them in Germany in '93 when he was riding around in an M1 as an Armored Cav Capt. Now he was an Air Force Major and moving to New Jersey to be a Judge Advocate. (AF lawyer) Works for me.:huge: :To quote the booklet for the speakers..."for reproduction of the full dynamic range of contemporary recordings, including CDs, an amplifier delivering up to 400 watts with the L100S will provide optimum performance." :yikes: And" There is virtually no danger of damaging your speakers if......" I like em!. The other real score was not normal AK material; a Roman Red 1960 Chevrolet Corvair 700 4 dr sedan with 13,788 original miles for $900.:thmbsp: The nicest original Corvair I've seen outside of a museum or a CORSA National convention. Overall, 2003 was a pretty good year. What should I do to repair the HPM-900s?

Hi stu, and welcome to AK. Wish I could find a good deal on some JBLs...

Here are some recent discussions about the 900 woofers. Are you sure that only the foam is bad? The cone material is very brittle and can cause problems over time. If indeed the cones are going, act fast because there are only a few replacements around... see below threads:

If you want, I'll buy your old 900s from you and give them a nice home.:D I've been wanting to stack two pairs anyway:cool:

Re: HPM-900 woofers

If they are a-buzzing, then it may be too late to save the woofers. I can't say for sure but I think the failure mode for these may go something like this.

Foam rots and the cone becomes unevenly damped and small cracks start developing. On the pair of woofers I found, the crack started radially then worked slowly down to the dustcap and finally ran around the dustcap.

Some interesting tales about your finds. Too bad the closest significant military bases are at least 100 miles away from my place.

'Tis true about those military base finds, I too have been fortunate to make some nice scores... I always ask whoever I meet if the've old stereo gear... The guys that went to Germany usually had the nicest gear!

There aren't any bases around here but the last two big purchases I made were both from vets who were stationed in germany.

Nice thing is that they often kept the boxes and such since they knew it was giong to have to be shiped back to the USA :)

Also sometimes they didn't use the gear much, I belive because they bought it only because it was so darn cheap for them on the base. Got it home and just let it sit.

Two decades at Minot?

Wow...Now that's a long assignment.

I was in Mountain Home and they would threaten us with Minot when someone would screw up. :D

I picked my HPM 1500's and SX-1280 around MT Home.

Look in the base phone book, most are run by the Officer's Spouse Club or some such.

I've snagged a few items out of the Charleston AFB thrift shop, most recently a pair of Dynaco A-25's in good shape for 3 bucks.

TA, though, is the undisputed KING of base thrift shops. I think he has a plaque dedicated to him at the McGuire AFB thrift shop.

Hi Guys! Thanks for all the replies. The HPM-900 woofers aren't shot, just the foam is crunchy and self destructing on one. Is foam better/longer lasting than rubber? Or a horse apiece? I've been at Minot 20 years but retired for 51/2. Yes, I actually CHOSE to stay here:dunno: Minus 95 (wind chill) DOES keep the riffraff out! And lots of tourists, for that matter...

Do you ever run across any of the old Off Duty magazines? I have been looking for some from the late 70's early 70's but can't seem to find any down here.

When my grandpa and dad both worked at McClellan AFB, they were always getting these outrageous deals. I got a few myself from airman who were about to be either reassigned or discharged and couldn't take everything with them.

Likewise on the old 'Off Duty HiFi Annuals' - I have bought scanned versions of two of them, and they are a real great memory trigger for me. I love wandering through 'em and reliving my (misspent) youth...and I'd love laying my hands on a few more of them if I could find 'em!

Those military thrift shops are absolute gold mines. Some of my "greatest hits" are from those places.

Don't you need a military ID card in order to get on base?
