My EPI 150 (Series 2/3?)

Okay, so I got these guys, as mentioned in this thread. Not great news, I am sad to say, as we have one tweeter that is not doing its job (or anything else, as far as I can tell through the grill cloth).

I will open things up this weekend and see what's what, and I'll post some pics here too, since there doesn't seem to be a lot of pics or even info on these online (correct me if I'm wrong). If anyone has any pre-advice on the matter, shoot!

Also, some first impressions: I did a bit of comparison in mono with the one that seems to be working fine vs a DLK/3 (running 100W to each). For the most part, I'm not wild about it. The mid-range seems exaggerated, the bass is way loud around, I'm guessing, 200Hz, but not much of anything down around 40Hz where I like it. Kind of boomy without the extension to give it impact, you know? Not hearing very good detail anywhere either.

On the plus side, it sounds huge and wide open. Just the one speaker fills my whole living room pretty well, where the DLK/3 sounds closed-in in comparison. I can get a similarly open sound from the DLKs, but only with very careful positioning and a larger room.

So yes, pics and probably questions coming later this week. Feel free to chime in, in the meantime. Oh, and please don't flame me for dissing an EPI, be helpful :worried: Maybe I didn't give it what it needs yet..

I had a pair that a cat had used as a scratching post. As you know, the base is just plastic, the cover is a sock that slides on and off. You'll find the drivers to be JBL, I believe Human might still have some of the tweeters at the very least. The cab is just 1/2" particle board if I'm not mistaken, it was one of the last speakers sold under the EPI name I think as well but long after anything resembling the namesake line had disappeared.

If I recall, the bass was indeed boomy, and probably didn't extend very well past 50Hz, the mids were in your face but the highs were rather pleasant.

I bought mine for the uniqueness and the belief that anything with the EPI name would sound pretty good. Funny thing about belief...

But then it isn't a REAL EPI as far as I'm concerned.

Okay so I never got around to posting pics of these, partly because they turned out to be so remarkably crappy. The dead tweeter turned out to also be a non-stock replacement hack job. It looks like someone attempted to re-size the bevel with a steak knife. Regardless of that, the sound on the good one is utterly worthless. However, I do actually quite like the dispersion off these cabinets, and I still think they look really cool. So....

I'm considering doing an admittedly foolhardy DIY job on these to see what happens. The cabinet material is cheap, but with pretty solid rabbet joints.. I'm thinking I could try it out, and then add a damping layer or something if it seems at all promising.. Most of what prompted this thought is it only took me about three seconds of searching to come up with the "Affordable 1" kit that Zalytron is offering. The "Best Quality Vented Box" specs are identical(!) to these boxes, and the tweeter is very similar to the stock ones on these, which actually sound pretty decent.

I guess the question becomes: do you think that kit is worthwhile at all in the first place? It wouldn't take much work to try it on one of these boxes, and then use it for something else if it was an obvious fail.

nobody wants to weigh in on my stupid idea? I'm probably going to do it...

personally i would use a genesis tweeter, boston acoustics tweeter or one of the T/E EPI tweeters.

you can find them on epay pretty cheap.....I agree that these aren't what EPI was all about..but you can take them back there...

I like that idea, but then I have to figure out my own crossover which is something I don't even know how to begin...

Interesting about the EPI 150. I have a pair of 100s and 200s. I like them both. I've also heard the 180s and they too are very nice. Someone gave me a pair of cabinets that have the same volume as the 150s. Very similar dimensions too. I have a full set of spare EPI drivers. I was thinking of throwing them in the cabitnets for a pair of 150s, but I think I'll give that a second thought. I have to say though that the 100s and the 200s with the passive woofer are excellent. I've had no less than 50 pairs of speakers through here of all sorts and the EPIs hold their own quite well. One thing I did with the 200s that I was chastised for by the EPI purists was adding a coil in series with the 8" woofer so as to have a full first order crossover. I think I came up with 60uh with the 8 or 10uf cap (can't recall the value now). It was a noticeable improvement.

When I had mine, I tried several different tweeters, took out the mids, played with the crossovers and came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the effort.

I am having some intermittent signal-loss in one of my EPI Series 2 Model 150 speakers. After ruling out all external connection possibilities, I'd like to get inside the cabinet to inspect the wiring, but it looks impermeable. Any guidance?

Thanks.

EPI 150 Series 2

@MGordon514 to open the 150s remove the screws securing the cabinet to the plastic base and remove the base. Loosen the sock from the adhesive bottom and pull it up off the cabinet carefully. Reverse the procedure to reassemble.

Damn, you're really pickin' your spots.

Any chance of 2 more posts before the next 9 years pass? :D :o

I hope you know it's ALL in jest.

So what? Am I supposed to check every post for the date now before I reply? Is that a rule? So exactly when can I post, and what is too old to reply? Jeez... some people! :-(

If you have useful information you should post it in even an old thread, as someone searching for that subject may find it and possibly be helped or at least entertained.
