By popular demand, and out of respect for another Technics Owners thread started by AK member Roivas, lets have a thread devoted to the Technics SL-1300/ 1400/ 1500 turntables. I've had (3) SL-1500's and an SL-1400. Still have the 1400 and a 1500. The 1500 has been modded and gets most of the play.

What say you FanboiS, show off your decks :smoke:

I have a near mint SL1500. I don't use it much any more as I've moved on to a different table, but there very nice reliable tables and are very easy to work on.

I have dozens of Technics tables at any one time, but my SL 1510 (black SL 1500) which I bought new in 1976 is my favorite. It has a Shure V15 Type 3 with the MR stylus on it, my best cartridge/stylus combo.

Suggestion. Please rename this club to SL-1100-SL-1700 owners club. They are technically of the same family. And share common build, engineering, and philosophy technically speaking. SL-110 and SL-120 are also relatives. Basically make this non SL-1200 owners in this family or at least include SL-1200 original models. SL-1200 Mk II and higher have their club already.

Oh a fan here. The SL-1400 was my first vintage table I picked up years ago. It's why I joined AK :)

And I'll also throw in my SL-1300MK2......I love this table too.

I'm all for it Kent :tresbon:

I am in . . . Running SL-1500 as my primary table in the solid state setup. I rehabbed it and soldered on low capacitance video cables on it . . . Got a remarkable bottom end bass out of the 1500 . . . Best change I ever made was making those cables and soldering them in!

Running a Yamaha YP-B2 on my vintage tube 2 channel setup until I can get my Dual 1019 up to speed.

For other working tables all over the house and for backups too.

What are you using now, my good friend? :scratch2:

Yours was a MK2 I recall, correct?

Well Paul I have the following Technics tables:
1 SL1100A bought new in 75 or 76
2 SL1500 Non MKII
SL1500MKII It was a mess when i got it and fixed a few things
3 SL1800MKII fully modded
4 Another less modified SL1800MKII bought it to make into a record cleaning machine but just couldn't do it so i rebuilt it.
5 SL1700MKII in mint condition has a new arm and has been repainted to look like a 1710MKII

At the moment I'm using a JVC Y66F............

How about updating your first post to show all me,ber who are in, and updating it regularly?

Actually, Roivas is doing a fine job of keeping and updating a running list in his "The Official -Technics SL-1600/1700/1800- Owners Thread". In retrospect this thread seems redundant.

Hey guys,
I'm new to AK. I'm a proud owner of a SL-1400. I love that table.

I posted a question as a thread, but figured maybe I will have better luck here with a targeted audience.

Anyone know how to go about replacing the tonearm rest on a 1400? It is different from TTs such as the 1200, because I can't see where to access any kind of screw to release the old rest (or in my case, the remnant of the piece after my 2 yr old snapped it off). All I see is the silver "tube" / post coming right off the table, with the black plastic (and metal post inside that plastic) coming from inside that silver tube. Can't figure out how to get it off so I can put a new one on.

Any help?

There's a screw that threads into the bottom of the post. You need to take the bottom off to access it.

Hey John,
Thanks for the response. That's one of the things I tried before coming here for help. Unless I'm not smart enough, I can't see where to unscrew anything. I took the bottom off and there is a screw in the same spot as the tonearm rest, and I took it out--but that screw only holds in a plate inside the turntable, and it has nothing to do with the rest. There is a very small hole revealed after removing that screw, and I can even tell if there's a screw in there. I even tried using a very small screwdriver, and I couldn't manage to fit it into any kind of slot on top of a screw. But it's very difficult to see into that hole to know if there is in fact a screw. Are you saying there is one? I imagined there would be, because I see the metal "post" which seems like it would be threaded, coming out the other side (top of table). But again, I failed to get anything turning or loosening at all.

Am I missing something? I really appreciate the help.

You have to take the TT apart to replace the rest, however, if you buy an SL 1200 MK2 rest, you can enlarge the hole in the bottom of the SL 1200MK2 rest with a drill and and glue it on to the the remaining metal stub of the original rest.

Yeah, you're new here so you don't know that, when I say "screw", I always mean "nut". ;) Sorry.

The end of the shaft of the tonearm rest is threaded and protrudes through the tonearm base, It's secured with a nut ans washer.

You should go to the VinylEngine and register for free. After you've done that, go to the Library section and then to the Technics page. Find the link to the SL-1400. Click on it and then, on the next page, click the link for the "service manual (en)". That will open a dialog box where you can start the free download of the service manual in PDF format.

Look at page 12.

All will be revealed.

John

Thanks! I'll go and do just that.

Should I buy the 1200 and enlarge the hole, or is there a seller who is known to stock parts for the 1400?
