Klipsch KG4 Crossover Recap

Performed some crossover work for a pair of OLAs, on a pair of KG4s that I used to own.

Bob Crites diaphragms were already installed and the owner also purchased caps and polyswitches from Bob. I must say, they do sound much better than when I owned them. The highs are much smoother with the new diaphragms.

Did you or the owner consider buying cheaper caps? I plan on getting the titanium diaphragms for my KG4s, but I'm also looking at cheaper caps.

Actually, the owner (after doing his own research) wanted to stick with the Bob Crites recommended caps. The ESR values were identical to the caps that were replaced, except for the electrolytics which just a bit higher compared to the new ones. These KG4s were made in 1985.

I didn't like the lack of support for the 3uf cap so I drilled a hole in the board and added a tie wrap to firm everything up.

I would suggest to you that you will be much happier with the poly switch out of the circuit. In my experience in a high rez system an in line poly switch can eat up a lot of performance as a result of loss of detail. Why don't you tag a jumper wire across the switch and listen for a while and see for yourself. The only time a poly switch is required is when you have someone who always plays the system at 11. If you have even reasonable ears you can tell when you are playing too loud for comport and all that is required is to dial it back a notch or two. Just my two cents. Best regards Moray James.

Good to know, thanks. I'll have to tell the owner, he picked them up this afternoon.
