G9000 gets part 2 of its re-cap...

kevzep

Its all about the Music
I started this last year, but then things got busy when the G22K turned up, so I thought I would press the AU/TU999 back into service in the bedroom system, and tear into this and get it finished.....

Just put the order in tonight......so the waiting begins......Im not doing the tuner board, I think its playing with fire recapping a tuner without an alignment afterwards....Since there is nobody in New Zealand who does tuner alignments, I am taking my chances and leaving it.

I'm going to enjoy following this. I've been wanting to do this to some of my G's. But, I'm going to wait until I retire (in three years) to do them.

I plan to skip the tuner boards as well. But, I've often wondered if it's possible to send just the tuner section to an expert for alignment. Any thoughts on that?

If its a G-22000 or a G-33000 I would say yes (as with any discrete tuner) - but I would have doubts about the alignment if it were a tuner section removed from a receiver like the G-9000 et al.

Are you going to tackle those dual caps?
well, I think I just might you know, I think the 80v 10,000µf BHC's I used in my AU-999 might just be the perfect fit......
That will give me 20,000µf
I can't believe he won't :scratch2:

Yeah, you just watch me not do it.......:D

since I dont have anywhere to send it locally, I dont think its worth it for me personally, over there in the USA I think you are always going to find an alignment option where you could send the whole receiver.......

yeah just thinking about it, if I was doing alignments myself (which I might just have to learn how to do) I would rather have the complete unit......

Getting a bit done while waiting for the caps, I had some in stock to get started with.....

Yep, that glue again, nasty around those particular caps...

Panasonics going in......
p1070488.jpg

CLEAN THAT CRAP OFF!!!
I choose not to use solvents, anything which is a solvent for that stuff aint gonna be breathed in by me......So I scrape it off, may not look quite as elegant, but its how I roll .........

More caps going in.......

I also cleaned the Tuning Cap as per DrAudio......the tuning was a bit intermittent and somewhat weaker than it should be....I didnt take any pics of that operation though......

Also went through and cleaned the switches, you must dismantle the push switches to get the contacts lubed and cleaned.......

Now we wait for caps to arrive......

Nice work...
I see your scraping the glue off the board...Mind if I share a tip? MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) works wonders for breaking down that glue, and will not damage the green silkscreening on the boards...

It is very close to Acetone, but does not dry near as quickly. Apply with Q-Tip, wait a few minutes, re-apply, wait a few more minutes, wipes off like snot.

Should have some ventilation. It will give you a bit of a buzz...

Thanks Paul, they are actually more of a handful to work on than the G22000, theres a lot packed into the G9000 behind the front panel there....

The old MEK, we used to use it to get the old glue off when re coning our JBL's back in the 80's early 90's......(E and K series).
Im just not good with that stuff even with ventilation, I'm a bit of a girl when it comes those fumes.....I havent re coned a speaker in 15 years thank goodness.
Good call on the q tips though, would make a cleaner job of it for those brave enough to go in with the MEK.

Without good ventilation I wouldn't use the MEK, it was the solvent of choice in my early career as an aircraft mechanic, and may well have contributed to the breathing problems I have today, but we used it in bucket full quantities.
One use now is remove melted heel rubber from the chromed exhaust of a motorcycle....be careful out there.:thmbsp:

Will be interesting to see what you replace those 4 large supply caps with, their pin spacing is wider than most caps today as I remember. Of course I will promptly (borrow) the results :D

You should learn how to align tuners Kev, I bet there's some down there that could really use it. Nice work!

Yeah, been thinking about it, but the problem is there is no tuner aligning gear down here that I can find, so I am limited to bringing gear in from overseas, probably USA....
FM stereo generator, distortion analyzer, RF probes.......fair bit of outlay for doing the odd tuner.....I looked at this a while ago, its gonna cost a lot of money with the freight/shipping involved....
Shame, because I am quite interested in tuner alignment........

Yup - me too, same issues...

I will most likely dismantle them and fit the BHC caps inside......

The other option is I have is these 15,000µf 130V caps, but then there would be no oval caps in there any more, I would like to retain the original look as much as possible.....so we will see....

I remember a thread here on AK that described the step, with pics, on how to do the small caps in the old cap case. You might try an AK search and see if you can find it. Maybe someone remembers it and can add the link.

Out come those oval caps.........
p1070492t.jpg

Time for a clean up in there.....
p1070493x.jpg

Then I looked out the window to ponder which caps to stuff in those oval cans....
p1070494v.jpg

Then I was hungry so I boiled up some Nichicons for lunch....but really what I was doing was melting that disgusting crap that holds the caps inside....worked a treat, it was all too easy doing it this way...
p1070499.jpg

Then I realized after I took the black sleeve off I could have just cut around the bottom of the black plastic sleeve to get the insides out, so now I will have to get the huge heatshrink....should be all good though...I feel like such a knob tearing all that off now, Oh well, whats done is done, and I will now have the challenge of making them even better....:thmbsp:
p1070500.jpg

Im looking at some Panasonic 10,000µf 80V T-HA caps....they seem to be cheap enough and just the right size.....

Nice view. Are they filming The Hobbit, near your area?
