Smaller Advent model find

I was offered these small advent speakers by the original owner, one of them keeps blowing tweeters. I figured they were worth me fixing, but I don't know much about this model. They are in near perfect condition, and came with the original boxes and packing. I am pretty sure the coil is bad on the one that blows tweeters, so I will check further and do a recap.

Dang, that's cool. Definitely worth the effort.

I did a little searching on these, and it seems they are very well liked. I have owned Legact II's and really thought they were pretty special, I'll dig into them tomorrow and do a recap, then see what they sound like.

I like them better than any other Advent other than the Powered Advents. With the right amp they can sound exactly like the OLA while not having the midrange suckout. As I downsize, I decided my OLAs were disposable while the Smallerss were to remain, at least for now. Though 4-ohm, they do not appear to present the nasty issues most 4-ohm speakers present.

Good to know, can't wait to get them freshened up and see how they do.

Nice speaks. I've two pair doing HT duty in the bedroom, one pair with the green tweets and the other with the orange tweets. Damned if I can tell the difference.

That sounds like OLA fried egg tweets.
I don't remember if the smaller Advent used fried eggs.

I thought the color difference was only to aid when building a 4 ohm or 8 ohm speaker.

The small Advents had FE tweeters and were 4 ohm IIRC.

I'd check the cap or lack of one in the speaker causing the problems.

From what I have found out, the orange tweeters have a slightly larger magnet than the green that came with these. I have read that they both are 4 ohm, and at some point they even used orange ones in these models. I was able to solder the broken tinsel lead on a spare that the owner gave me, but it created a small hole in the cone. I used a small piece of paper wicked with glue to cover the hole, I'll see if it works today.

I liked mine when I had them, amazing bass from such a reasonable sized package....the tweets are the weak link...the Dr. Frankenstein in me always wanted to try pair up that woofer with the AR 18's tweeter......

Smaller used fried egg tweeters, green I think initially and later on orange.
Whether green or orange, both are too bright for me.
Other than that, they are okay.

Looks like your pair is either mismatched or one has tweeter replaced and crossover may/should be different.
4uf vs 8uf vs 12 uf so confirm it with what you have. You may have two different crossovers in there.

Blowing tweeter can be due to something wrong in the crossover.

Here is the schematics:

Slightly different values depending upon whether it's green or orange tweeters so confirm with your crossover first: http://www.davidreaton.com/PDFs/Smaller_Advent_Crossover.pdf

Which tweeters do your Smaller Advents have? The green ones or the orange ones?

The original green ones had a smaller magnet than the full sized Advents had to match the efficiency of the woofer. Later, Advent put tweeters in that had the large magnets in them and the cones are orange (although there may be some with green cones). The thing to do is actually look at the magnets. The smaller ones are 2.5 inches square and the larger ones are 3 inches square.

I believe Advent changed the crossover when they made the change sometime in 1975. It makes sense that the crossover you have would have been used in the smaller magnet units and the crossover with the 3 ohm resistor in the later, large magnet units.

I can not remember the colors of the tweeters but the OLA and Smaller used the same design but slightly different spec'd. The color denoted which was which. At some point the colors were just mixed and finally only one color used. When a tweeter needed replacement later during their runs you got the one color regardless of the original color. I used to remember the details but the mind is not as good as it once was.

Great stuff, thanks for the information.:thmbsp:

I have a stock pair in the garage, for got which color the fried eggs are but I believe orange. I also have a set of the green ones from the OLA's I had and the big woofers that need a refoam. I tossed the cabs as I was running out of room in the garage. What a day that was, all went to the curb and within 10 minutes, all were picked up! Infinity SM120s, Baby Advents, OLA's, Cizek Monitors and other stuff LOL

The green tweeters with the smaller magnets had slightly less output than the orange ones which were used only in the Advent Loudspeaker at first (Advent didn't call them Large). At some point in the production they just used the same tweeter for both. I don't know if crossover changes were made to accommodate the higher-output orange tweeter.

The green ones are harder to find, I know that.

Well, guess it isn't hard to tell what the problem was, looks like they had an amp problem to do this. They are lucky it didn't go up in flames.

The owner supplied a pair of extra crossovers, so I replaced the caps, and used the original resister since it was 1 ohm, and the other had a 2ohm. Not sure if the coil is rated different, they are different styles but it's all I have at the moment. Now it's going back together. :thmbsp:

Finished up the one with a tweeter problem, I'm impressed :music:, now to recap the other one and let them play in. :thmbsp:

I was about to suggest that it was probably an amp problem. I've seen that before. Speakers are passive, damage is active, thus suspect the amp.

Originally, The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker had green fried egg tweeters. I'm convinced the only reason Advent made them green was to easily ID them compared to the regular Advent Loudspeaker tweeters which did, indeed, have a larger magnet, 3" square instead of 2.5" square.

The Smaller Advent tweeter was originally made with a smaller magnet assembly to match its efficiency to the woofer.

Sometime in 1975, Advent decided to put the same tweeter in both speaker models, the one with the bigger magnet, and, so, there are regular Advent tweeters with green cones as they used those cones up. There are 1975 Advent Loudseakers with green cones. I have a pair.

After that, both models can have orange cones and the Smaller Advent crossover was modified to compensate for the larger magnet.

The type of tweeter is not the determinant as to whether the system is 4 or 8 ohm and the cone color, itself, does not denote whether it has a small or large magnet except in models built before the changeover date in 1975. That must be determined by examination of the magnet itself.
