Sumiko Pro-Ject Perspective Turntable

HypnoToad

I have been eyeing this off and it looks good and the reviews seem to indicate it's a very nice sounding table.

Anyone have experience with it?

How would it compare to my trusty Technics SL1200Mk2?

I don't want to discuss price or value just reliability and sound.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Here's a link to it but would not be buying from these people:

whats wrong with your trusty technics.? I believe most sound improvement will come from better, spelled hi end, cartridge/stylus. Im sure others will dissagree.
I know nothing of that TT but if you love it and just have to have it then buy it . at 1000+ it can't be too bad

The Technics does a fine job and I will keep it, the one I am looking at is used and about half new price.

Great table, super Tone Arm, what's not to like? If you pass on it at that kind of price let me know.
Regards,
Jim

It's hard to not discuss price, because if you wanting to know the best sounding table, of course you want to know the price. Like, I would say, spend a few hundred more, and you can get a table that is even substantially superior in performance, if you pick VERY carefully.

You could just change out the tone arm on your 1200MKII and easily get the performance or better of the table you linked here and have saved a bunch of money in the process. Or go to an even better table.....

I can't imagine how you could go wrong with this one, and I also can't imagine how this wouldn't be a clear upgrade over the Technics. First of all, you may have heard me singing the praises of that particular tonearm in this forum before, it's excellent, and it gives you the freedom of selecting virtually any kind of cartridge. It's suspended, the motor is away from the tonearm/cartridge, it has RCA jacks instead of hard-wired cables (I'm a big proponent of that), adjustable everything on the tonearm - and a record clamp!

I know you said you didn't want to talk about value (sorry got on a bit of a tangent), but I do have experience with the tonearm this uses, so I figured I'd throw in my two cents.

Well the tone arm on the Pro=Ject costs more then the Technic's table does So I have to agree with Mr. Lin.

I too have the 9C tonearm on my RM-5 and love it.

Not sure if the prospective has changed since I auditioned it but the one thing that bugged the heck out of me about it was the need to swap out motors when switching between 33 and 45 rpm.

Not its not really a big deal but I have a hard enough time not misplacing my record brushes much less a TT's motor.

Otherwise I like the sound of this table.

Is a Pro-ject Perspective a better sounding table than a Technics? Easy answer, buy it at that fantastic price and let us know..... You'll love it

Tooling for the Technics arm was paid for decades ago.

Yeah that's kind of the point though, we're talking about decades old technology versus new technology. Sorry, I just don't buy that the Technics is in the same category as this turntable, regardless of the large following it has.

Highly doubtful IMO.

I don't know what there is to doubt. The chassis is a thick cast aluminum mated to a massive rubber dampening block. Like wise, the platter is a considerable chunk of cast aluminum, machined to final finish and mated with rubber dampening components. The motor is top notch high torque unit, runs very quiet and is quartz locked to be of a much higher speed stability than most 'audiophile' decks until you get to a very high cost range. In some cases (not many), you might get some electrical feedback hum through some cartridges, but not commonly. This can be fixed by going the external PS route option that is offered by some 3rd parties. The only substantial weak link is the arm, which is measurably demonstrated to be excessively resonant, thus being the major source of coloration on this device. Fortunately, 3rd party mounting plates are available to easily change out to an arm matching the quality of the table itself.

Present some specs so we can have a conversation in the real world. Does the Project arm have equal to or less friction than the Technics? Let's compare apples to apples.

Buy the way, VINYL is decades old technology, now isn't it.

Oh, the bearings in the Technics are probably superior. They measured that arm in an old magazine issue - it has superb bearing friction numbers. But that's not the problem..... the problem is that this arm is extremely resonant. It has several weak points and the tube itself is not suitably damped, all combining to produce a substantially resonant arm system when compared to better, more modern arms.
