Unity Audio sub...

Hi All,

I have, sitting in my room, a Unity Audio subwoofer. It's a passive unit that weighs, oh, I don't know, maybe a billion pounds. A cat got to it and the rubber surround on one of it's two drivers needs some help. I've removed the tattered remains of the grill cloth that once covered four sides of this monster.

Upon removing the bottom cosmetic cover, I found four very large coils making up a simple passive crossover. It has two inputs and no outputs. Each input runs one of the drivers. As I mentioned, it is passive so has no controls at all.

It seems a very high quality unit that I could get for cheap, but I can't quite decide how to utilize it in my system. It crosses over a bit high for my ADS L810s. It was partnered with a small pair of bookshelf speakers that my friend still has at his place. They were very nice, but remarkably lacking in bass. I'm beginning to wonder if these were designed as a dedicated sub/sat system. He tried to hook it up, but the BPC receiver he was using didn't work very well and it sounded, well, like crap. Not sure why.

Anyone have any insight on this sub and how I might use it. I'm considering trying my subwoofer plate amp on it. I supose I would want to bypas the coils if I were to do that. I should try to get the small bookshelf speakers over here and see if I can't get the whole thing fired up correctly. If that is indeed what we have here, it might be a shame to break up the set, though they're all in poor condition.

Take care,

Ed

I'll post a few pictures later on. I did pop out one driver. They're very nice Pyramid 12" drivers with rubber surrounds and Kevlar cones.

Has anyone got any advice on patching rubber surrounds? I was considering that black RTV sealant that you use on cars. I guess I was thinking about it because I have to install a water pump today. A friend of mine suggested rubber cement. I believe I've heard folks here talk about using both. Any suggestion appreciated.

Well, I pulled my Dayton plate amp from the big JBL last night and hooked it up to this unit on my main rig. I believe this is going to be quite nice when I get it all fixed up. Sounds fantastic, except for the odd noise from the loose rubber surround bits. Damed cats.

I think the best thing for this sub is a nice high drop onto the top of the cat. :D

Then you take a soft damp cloth and wipe off all the goo. The rest I have no idea, but that would be a good start. :D <---------- this coming from a household with 12 cats. You gotta control them with an iron fist or they start to think they run things. :D

I did some searching around here and it seems rubber cement is the prefered cement for rubber. Go figure. I'll pick some up and have at it. I'll snap a couple of pictures as I go.

As for the cats, I guess I should be glad. If they hadn't torn into it it's unlikely I'd have the opportunity to buy it for low dough. It sure looked a terror when I picked it up though.

I got it fixed up pretty well. I took some pictures along the way.

Wish I had taken a picture before I removed the cated up cloth. But you get the idea. I'm listeing to XM Chill right now. They're playing something by an artist called Bomb the Bass right now. lol. It's doing just great. In fact, I can't hear it at all, so I think I have the amp set just about right. I'm using it with the ADS L810s with the crossover set at 40 Hz. It's very nice indeed.

Oh, forgot to mention!

My wife took a few minutes to help me make the new grill cloth sock for it! Ain't she the best?

Have you tried setting the crossover higher like around 60 or even 80? If the sub plays flat with no boom boom it might even sound better higher. Give it a try.

I did experiment a bit with the crossover point last night. I ended up with it nudged up a bit from 40. Hard to say exactly where I ended up. I may break out the Db meter and test CD and see what I have.

There is just a little bit of foam glued to the inside of the cabinet. I was surprised how little. It looks as if it's strategically placed for some effect.

And Ross, you are too correct. Oh, and there's a pair of KLH 17s at our favorite thrift store...

Take care,

Ed
