Vintage jbl 4671 ....any input???...Please!

I have an opportunity to trade for a pair of Vintage jbl 4671. From what I understand there were intended to be used in a theater. Does anyone have any experience with these? Opinions? What would they be worth? Would they make a good pair for a tube set up at home?

Thanks, Dean

They're certainly efficient.

2370(A) is just about nobody's favorite M/H horn. The network in 4671 provides fixed HF "boost."

There's plenty of bass, but it's not extended, so you may need a sub. There's also ways to "fix" the bass response for home use.

These are more stupid loud party speakers than home HiFi here, (portable Cabaret version stacked on subs, below,) but a tube amp may tame them nicely; never tried that.

$600 the pair mint, max. $250 max, thrashed....

Could'nt be more wrong, Zilch. I have the 4671 for the past 22 years. Makes a great Hi-Fi system. Bass is as low as needed for home use. Depends on the source material.
Bass and mid bass is tight and accurate.

The 3110A has a selectable MID and HF boost. You must be thinking about the 3110 when you say the HF boost is fixed.
BTW, have you ever listened to a pair? I mean listen for extended periods.

These aren't 'stupid loud party speakers.' They happen to be a very good sounding, large format JBL system. Paired with a solid state DC amplifier, bass is tight and accurate. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have them in my system for the past 22 years.
Reading frequency response on a graph isn't the only way to judge a speaker. Taken as a whole in real world conditions is the only way, IMO to judge. In fact, I listened to a pair of JBL 4435 at the time I bought the 4671. The two shared a similar over all sound.

The 2370 offers a smooth respones. The speakers don't need to be raised more than a couple of inches off the ground.

If you can get a pair at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with these speakers.

Yup, but needs a sub.

See the schematic, showing 3110A hard-wired to max HF boost as standard spec. Later versions abandoned it. DIY, I'd use the variable version, yes.

See the pic I attached. That's Sub1500s on the bottom there.

There it is, with 3110A and competent extended bass.

So patently absurd you make my case, is what.

Appropriately categorized as a "PA" horn, the vertical beamwidth collapses to 28° at 8 kHz, 21° at 16 kHz, which is why it needs to be raised to ear level. The response is not all that smooth by contemporary home HiFi standards, but could be improved.

Nonetheless, I believe we're all in agreement: Buy them at the right price. :thmbsp:

Hi Zilch,
The 4671 makes a nice home system considering that it was never intended for home use. Compromises are to be expected. My comment re graphs was not a put down, so please don't take it that way. Your time and efforts are very helpful. I was stating that a fequency response graph of a driver is only as good as the conditions it was measured in. Once the driver/system is put into a room and in this case a home environment, the graph is less of an indication of it's performance.
The 4671, 4430, 4435... were designed for 'professional' use. Their use in a home environment can give unpredictable results. Both plus and minus. I my case, the overall sound is on the plus side.:thmbsp:

No problem, Ron, just different perspectives.

I trust everybody gets that it plays here, too.

You're running some of my favorite gear. :thmbsp:
