well, i got them. my brother knows the guy, and long story short i got them for a song.

:banana::music::D
Excellent!

i have a set of 10's, never heard the 20's. i am currently comparing them to sig. 2 ce's, no comparo, the dq's are way more detailed. a great buy, any info on these?

Cool! Vandies are on my short list; never heard them but I'm into short/no/open baffle.

I have early DQ-10 before the xover was improved, a much later 12, and 20i.

Power handling:

12 - 150 w
10 - 200 w
20i - 250 w
30 - ?

From the pics I can see they are closest to 20i's in overall size/shape but with major differences:

1 - they are ported, not enclosed A.S. bass cabinets.

2 - No airspace between the upper baffle and the bass cabinet. Can't see if there's a bass-reflex mid there.

3 - The upper baffles are staggered instead of tilted back.

4 - There's a treble adjustment, like the 10's, but unlike my 12's and 20i's.

5 - Biwireable! Unlike my 10's, but like my 12's and 20i's.

6 - The dust cover on the woofer seems much wider. Wonder who made the woofers? What's the VC diameter? Do they go lower than earlier ones?

Does the grill have that funky wire mesh or the better shear cloth?

best,

Hmmm. Well comparisons by quasi-objective criteria first:

MSRP / pair:

$2500 - DQ-20i
$2000 - DQ-20
$1950 - DQ-30 *thanks Bolly!
$1300? - DQM-9
$1300? - DQM-9c
(varies by year, 700?-1500?) DQ-10
$1500 - DQ-12

---

weight:

DQ-30 - ?
DQ-20/i - 70 lbs.
DQ-10 - 60
DQM-9 - ?
DQM-9c - 55
DQ-12 - 43

--

Power Handling:

DQM-9c - 25-140 w
DQ-12 -- 25-150 w
DQ-10 -- 40-200 w
DQ-20i - 50-250 w
DQ-30 - ?

---

Subjectively, it's all good.

Haven't replaced my 20i's blown tweeter so I can't say yet fer sure. 10's go lower, 3-way 20i's go louder and have 'better' drivers.

My newest ones, 1994 DQ-12's, are the most detailed in the mids in nearfield; and have the smallest sweet spot. Mids of any vintage Dahlquists are out of this world...

Could be a re-Cap be needed for the others? Or is the 12's Vifa 25mm tweet simply better than the 20i's 2008/8517 ScanSpeak 19mm? Or those weren't original? :scratch2:

My 10's are 17000's SN's so the Xovers are the older, unimproved type...30 years for electrolytics...

30's are pretty rare. Would like to see what the Xover looks like in there, if they still used Solen caps and what values...

cheers!

Missing Link--the DQ-30?

Ported bass,
Aluminum tweeter,
untilted staggered unrounded trapezoidal baffle,

Hmmmm....:scratch2:

On another forum, someone said the DQ-30 was the last speaker Jon Dahlquist was involved in designing. If that's true, then the design switches may represent advances, not sideways or quality regression.

Once we know how much they weighed & cabinet wall thicknesses, that'll tell a lot also in the Brand Pecking Order (BPO). And caps.

(The DQM-9c I just got has a freq response and wattage handling/sensitivity that place it surprisingly high up on the BPO.)

In retrospect, the DQ-12 has Carl M's signature significantly on it; the more open airspace around the baffle and the soundstage is more Alon-like than the DQ-20.

JD with S Marantz = DQ-10,
JD with CM = DQ-20,
JD with CM's increasing influence = DQ-12

Who did the DQ-30, the first ported DQ? A committee? CM does not assert his involvement with it on the Alon website (where he does wrt DQ-20 & DQ-12 models.)
