Got new stands for my Minimus 7's. JBL CF150's.

Big Vandies!! Mwahahah...
Got these yesterday but had to stash them in a friends garage until I could make room for them. The guy I bought them from kept saying they were loud, and for some reason I believe him. I haven't gotten to crank them yet because my sister is sleeping but I did try them quietly with Beethoven's 5th. They amazed me with how good they sound at such a low volume. Oh, and these things are bloody huge.18" x 19" x 35". Now for some specs:

1" tweeter
6.5" Midrange
15" (!!!) Woofer
98db @ 1w @ 1m

Here they are set up. I needed to rearrange my whole system to fit them. Also, please ignore the ugly green cart, I will replace it with something better looking but it just happened to be the right size.

Here are those 15" woogers with an album for scale. (my auto focus didn't want to cooperate)

The speaker hadn't even been in the house for 2 minutes before the cat found that he fit though the bass ports. We had to lure him out with a laser pointer.

Wow, I didn't realize they were that big. You have give them a go and let us know what they sound like.

Don't worry, I will do that the first chance I get. And from an initial listen they sound amazing. Oh, and the pictures don't do them justice for their size. Every time I walk into my room now I just look at them and go "Wow those are big"

They look nice, I'd have picked them up. But, I thought you were looking for Pro speakers, for a PA?

Good luck with them,

These will do the job at 98db @ 1w @ 1m, and I can use them in my room. Two birds, one stone. :D

nice find. report on em!

Well, all I can say from the half hour or so of listening I have done so far (about 15 minuets this morning at high levels) is that they are amazing. incredibly versatile too. My original fear was that the bass was going to be over powering, boomy and a bit floppy (opisite of being tight :D), but it is the exact opisite, subtle, fast and acurite. The mids.. I actually forgot about them, so I guess they are doing their job right and just disappearing into the music. I was also afraid the tweeters would be harsh and fatiguing but they aren't. they are very nice, sort of in between being smooth and harsh, which is right where I like them. They can hurt your ears if the sound they are fed is harsh but can reproduce a smooth sound perfectly.

There are two things that amaze me about these speakers though (apart from their size), how little the woofer moves to produce sound, and how quietly they can play. The woofer is capable of quite a bit of excursion because I saw them move quite a bit when I bumped my turn table, but even at a relatively high volume you can berily even feel them move, even if you gently tough them. And as for playing quietly, these things can play quieter than my Minimus 7's and still not loose any of the sound. I can turn them down to where I can hear the sound comeing from the headshell on my TT and the speakers still sound amazing.

Over all, I am very impressed with them. Oh, and yes, they get bloody loud. Even my little 35wpc receiver (which probably won't do more than 20 watts at them moment) can drive them to the point where you can't hear yourself singing at the top of your lungs.

Sensitivity isn't the only thing to consider here, those speakers don't look like they were made for PA work, and you'll run the risk of toasting tweeters (especially if you're underpowering them), crossovers and potentially those foam-edged woofers, too.

Just lookin' out for you, those look like nice speakers, I personally would never use them for a PA application. DJ, maybe...maybe with proper power to them.

Nice setup, by the way. Pretty JBL's! Bet they sound great.

They are nice looking, I just wish they were done in a walnut veneer instead of black painted wood grain. Oh and yes they sound amazing.

If anything I need to watch for clipping with them in my room, Like I have said before I only have 35wpc there. When I am going to use them for a bit of PA work (it is going to be relatively light duty as far as PA goes, like 115db or so, don't need the cops showing up) We have a very nice Carver receiver that can do 100wpc. It should be good for that, the place where we are having the concert is smaller than some of the listening rooms I have seen on here so it should not be a problem. Thanks for the concern though, I'll be careful with them. :thmbsp:

Damn Cats

You have a beautifiul set-up. Real cool.

I have never had floor speakers. Mine have always fit into my book shelf. I recently discovered that my damn cat (love him like crazy) is using my JBL L46s, which are now on the floor, as scratching posts. He has never even had or used a scratching post. I have no idea how to keep him away from them. What has been your experience? Chewing my computer mouse cords is one thing. I have gone through several. But my speakers are another situation altogether :nono:

Well, the cats are not allowed in my room so I do not need to worry about the speakers. But for other things we use a spray bottle. The trick with spray bottle is to not let the cat see you useing it. They need to associate scratching the speakers means getting sprayed, not scratching the speakers when you are standing there with the spray bottle means getting sprayed. And if that fails, temporarily tape some aluminum foil on the edges of the grills (assuming your cat scratches the edges of them like mine do), they hate the feeling of aluminum foil and wont scratch it.

The difference in program material is the issue I'm trying to point out- you can be reasonably certain that pre-recorded material playing through your home stereo falls within certain parameters, no way to predict that in a live/mic situation. Your move, of course. I wouldn't use either the Carver or those JBLs for a vocal/band PA. OK, if I was desperate I might maybe employ the Carver, if it had direct power amp inputs. You can't control the transients the open mics are picking up (or a dropped mic could cause), and that gear just isn't designed to take it. Hope it works out for you- put a limiter in line if at all possible- I don't know what mixer you're using, maybe there's one built-in. Check the output specs of the mixer, too, to see how it matches up with the input specs of the Carver.

:scratch2: You put up a good point about dropped mics and such. Yeah, I will have to find a limiter. I don't know what mixer I am useing because I don't have it yet.
