I just wanted to give a big thanks to dr*audio for fixing my NAD 3020 amp and Nakamichi TA-2A receiver, checking out 2 tape decks, and setting me up with a beautiful modified Onkyo DX-702 CD player. I've now got the best sounding system I've ever had. Many thanks!
To give a bit of background, when I first came to the US in 2002, I had to abandon all my previous stereo gear due to the wretched voltage difference between the US and most of the rest of the world. Relying mostly on eBay, I set myself up with a pile of vintage stuff for several systems around the house. To make a long story short, most of the used gear I bought then gave up service within a few months, and I didn't have the funds to replace it at the time. Basically, I was left with a crummy Nakamichi Receiver 3, a Toshiba SD-4800 DVD player, and a pair of Paradigm Atoms as my main system. The other stuff was put in storage in the basement.
Recently I decided to sell a pair of Paradigm 11se MkII, because I had nothing with enough umph to drive them with. Fortunately I posted in dollar and sense to find out what a fair price for them would be. The good people there quickly brought me to my senses, and talked me out of selling these great speakers. But what to drive them with? Well, I remembered the old NAD 3020 in the basement that had driven them beautifully years ago, but had sadly given up the ghost. In my desperation I considered attempting to repair it myself. This time the good people in the DIY forum brought me to my senses - I have no idea which way around to hold a solder iron - and dr*audio, who happens to be local to me, offered fixing the thing for me at a more than reasonable rate.
Not only did he fix several problems in the NAD 3020, including a blunder made by another repair person who had previously worked on the amp, he also fixed another receiver for me, and checked out a couple of Nakamichi tapes - sadly too expensive to repair, but at least I now know what I am at. Best of all, I was planning to spend $300 on a new CD player, but dr*audio pointed me to a beautiful Onkyo DX-702 on the local Craigslist, which I picked up for $25! With the op-amps upgraded by dr*audio for $35, this machine sounds better than I had ever thought possible from a CD player!
Now my Paradigm 11se MkII sing again, and I have a better sounding system that I ever had before - all for less money than I was planning to spend on a new CD player! Many thanks to dr*audio and all the other AK members who helped me out.
