Duffy - Rockferry

Artist - Duffy
Title - Rockferry
Release - 2008
Label - Mercury
Genre - Neo-Soul

Aimee Duffy is a Welsh singer/songwriter. In the first 5 weeks, her debut album sold more than 1,000,000 copies and it's still kicking butt on the charts world-wide. In New Zealand, the album debuted at #2, and the following week knocked Amy Winehouse's multi-platnium album off the top spot. Duffy is awesome!

Her vocals/songs reminds me of a blend of Macy Gray and Nancy Sinatra. Her music is very soulful and it's like listening to some good ol' Motown from the 60s/70s, but with a fresh perspective. Some of the melodies/beats reminds me of the Temptations, Madonna and even the Zombies. The instrumentation is simple, yet full and compliments each song. The more I listen to this record the more I love it.

If you buy one new artist/album this year, make this the one.

Also Dusty Springfield comes to mind. Nice low key album. Just don't think she is another Amy Winehouse; their styles are similar but NOT the same.

Btw, I love Nancy Sinatra. Good comparison!

I just looked at some of her videos on YouTube. I like her music. Duffy is much more original than Leona Lewis, the other hot young singer from the UK that seems, IMO, to be imitating Maria Carey.

The Duffy, Rockferry CD is 8 bucks on Amazon. Hhhhmmmm. Time for some new music.

Thanks Carl.

i was thinking of picking this up - i like what i've heard so far. now, you've pushed me over the edge. i'm going to grab it on the way home. thanks!

It took a few days. I grabbed Rockferry up on LP today at Newbury Comics. I got a free 45 of Mercy for free! I'll call that a mini-score. I'm listening now and really enjoying it.

Excellent CD

Duffy is awesome!
Gee thanks, I think you're pretty awesome too. ;)

I picked this up today after downloading the free Starbucks/iTunes copy of Mercy a few weeks ago. It took me about 20 seconds to be totally digging this CD. I listened to Rockferry three times before moving on to the second track and it would be perfect for a Bond movie. The entire CD is terrific and I was able to get into this easier than the Amy Winehouse CD Back to Black. The comparisons are obvious but I think this CD will gather a wider audience.

Her songs are finally making into rotation here on "the rock" and I am impressed as well. All the above reviews seem spot on.

Duffer, that is really funny.

I picked up the CD last week at Target after reading Carl's review. Very nice. One of those CDs that sounds better and better after repeated listens.

Cool.

I dunno. I picked this up some time ago on a huge recommendation of a friend.

I'm liking the title cut, Mercy is a nice catchy tune and so is Delayed Devotion which follows it.

But the rest of them... its like she's a soul singer with no soul. Just kind of empty.

Now the relatively new Mavis Staples, or Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings... we are talking about new SOUL.

Duffy's music has soul but is a little limited due to her not being raised hearing much music at all. I heard her interviewed on The World Cafe show and she explained her childhood.
I do agree that when it comes to sould Sharon Jones > Duffy but I do really enjoy Duffy's music. You just have to see where she is coming from.

I like Duffy a lot. She’s like Amy Winehouse without the crack pipe. I think it’s great that this sort of neo-soul is popular. I find it refreshing to hear actual musicians playing. Neither of these artists are or will be Aretha but they’re both very young and their (musical) hearts seem to be in the right place. I do think it’s sort of odd that this is happening in the UK more than here. Seems like we are rediscovering our music through the work of UK artists much like we did back in the 60’s.
