I had a real nice set of Allison Two's delivered to me yesterday. I got them home late last night, got them up and running, and in one word - smooth and detailed. I'm very impressed, reminds me of the AR LST except more air and detail. The surrounds are new, but I do have a slight buzz in one of the woofers. The edges of the surrounds are not sealed to the cone, and I removed the driver to make sure nothing was interfering with the rear of the cone but it was clear. Other than that all is as good as it gets from a pair of speakers this old. The wife even likes the way they look! The pics are of the speakers the way I got them, and any help on the woofer issue would be appreciated. I plan on sealing the surrounds ASAP, but I think the one 8" driver is toast. It distorts unless I push the cone in by pressing evenly on the suround, and has great voice coil movement with no sound or friction. Need a little guidance here. Retro or Snade?
Regards,
Jim

Your killing me!!:lmao:

Jim,
I don't know what to tell you. The woofers on mine were re-foamed by Army, and outside of encountering some bad wood (which between he and I, got fixed up real good) on the backside of the woofers, on the cabinets, and are working perfect now.

I can tell you this though, and you're really lucky here, but there are several of the vintage Allison speakers that use that same 8" woofer as you have in your Twos, including the Allison Fours. Too bad the Allison Fours I bought on eBay, to steal the tweeters out of, did not have the original woofers in them. My Allison Ones use a 10" woofer, and those are pretty much unobtaniam, unless someone is parting out another pair of Allison Ones, which surprisingly, happens more often than you would think.

Even with the small distortion problem with the one woofer the result is very impressive for a cone speaker. The job on the replacing the surrounds looks unfinished, the edges are not glued to the cone or the frame, and this does not look correct to me. I can even pull the surround away from the frame in some places. I will address this and then try to find a new driver if that does not solve the problem which I dont think it will. These speakers are so smooth, and not in our face as the maggies are. Not to knock the planers, but these are keepers. I have always wanted a tube setup and these will be the output for that sytem eventually. The more material I put through them the more respect is earned!! Great Job Roy !!!!

Jim

In my limited experience, I'd say that re-attaching that surround properly WILL solve your problem.

I hope so, I'm off to Wyoming for the weekend, and will deal with that when I return. Hope you are right,
Jim
