Ejfud's Jordan's Look and Sound Amazing

Ejfud's Jordans Look and Sound Amazing

Gary came over last night and brought the Jordans to hear how they'd sound crossed over with some subs. They sound terrific running top to bottom, but we had a feeling the top end would open up when the drivers weren't being pushed so hard to reproduce the low notes.

We had them hooked up in my system, first full range, then crossed over at about 80 Hz and running with my dual NHT W1 subwoofers. There was a huge improvement in the mids/highs. Much better detail and clarity, just better all around.

I've been playing with placement, and kinda have them dialed in, although I think they still need some tweaking. I've never really been into single-driver speakers, but I have seen the light with these. They do mids and highs very well. They do lows very well when run full-range, but the benefits of cutting them off from 80 Hz and down are huge.

Here are a few pics I snapped tonight. You can see them in relation to my Infinity Modulus speakers.

I'm still impressed with how they sounded full-range. Even with lower-powered tube amps they were as full and smooth as I like.

They did sound nice at RC's place. It would have been nice to hear them without all the commotion going on.

I wonder if the slanted ceiling changes the sound any compared to a "normal" room? I live in a 1 1/2 story so all my upstairs rooms are like this. They are all small rooms but I think it does help with small speakers like this.

I'm with Aaron on the sub really making these open up in his room. Smooth highs with the spooky imaging only a fullrange driver can produce. Played loud very well also.

So now I have to really rethink my system. I don't need the 4 12"ers like Aaron's, but a nice 10" sub crossover around 80 would be real sweet in my tiny room. Great another direction to chase, but these Jordan's are real keepers.

Dang Aaron that new camera takes very nice pictures. What is it?

Those look fantastic, and I imagine sound beautiful. As far as aesthetics go, I'm tending toward the modulus though. Maybe it's the stands?

But both side by side look great. At least your able to keep your speakers to a minimum. I have four sets ready for listening at all times.

Gary, the camera is a Panasonic TZ3, got it on clearance for $250. I like it because its small, but has 10X optical zoom, which will be good for drag racing. 7 megapixels to boot!

I am only borrowing these from Gary for a week or so, then they go back to him. I was surprised he was willing to give them up that long! Not really though, knowing Gary and what a great guy he is. They really do sound great, been listening to them in the system since I got them yesterday.

I am also looking forward to hearing these without three other systems playing in the background.

I think adding some low end using the right sub would a very nice addition to an already great sounding speaker :thmbsp:

How about that SVS woofer Gary? I still want to hear it in that cab first though :D

You know, they would look really great if you rounded the top of the enclosure to match the baffle.... I'm just saying, you know.

dew.

Aaron, could you explain how crossing the speakers over at 80Hz to a subwoofer could affect the mids & highs?

Well, you could make a dome for the top, veneered the same as the enclosure. ;)

I'm not Aaron, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

There is a lot of energy below 80Hz and pushing that through the same driver as the mids and highs will add thermal compression and also some doppler distortion to the upper ranges. The thermal compression happens when the coil heats up and will drop down the sensitivity as the power goes up so you'll lose some of the fine detail. I don't think these are really high power speakers so it will set in fairly early.

The doppler distortion will tend to smear the response a bit. Take for instance if you have Mariah Carey hitting a high note while there's a bass drum hit. Her voice will be modulating the speaker very quickly but without a lot of excursion, the drum will make the speaker move a long way so her voice would be coming from the cone being all the way out, then all the way in, then all the way out, etc. You will also get the effect of her voice coming from a cone moving toward you and away from you, just like the classic ambulance example of the doppler effect. If you limit the bass, the cone doesn't move as far and all sounds are coming from closer to the same point.

Mark, in my experience, speakers with small drivers that go down semi-low, to around 40 Hz or lower, tend to open up in the mids and highs when the driver is not pushed to reproduce the very low frequencies. It isn't just about using the subs, its crossing them over at 80 Hz (in this case), the drivers no longer have to go so low, and the subs can handle the bass information.

I remember reading a review of the 'Jordan Watts' Flagon speakers in an Aussie mag in the late '70s.The reviewer stated that he'd never heard better stereo imaging.
I'll bet they sound great 'subbed'. :thmbsp:

That makes sense - thanks Aaron
