It doesn't hurt "that" bad

I'm kind of empty today everybody. I got addicted to this hobby some 5 years ago and enjoyed the run but the time has come to be realistic and let go.

Letting go for all the right (rational?) reasons......

I'll never be able to use it all unless I keep rotating everything and that gets to be a burden given the weight and size of some pieces.

Everything is just collecting dust and fine pieces don't deserve that, not to mention all the pieces take up a lot of room.

After 5+ years I have come to appreciate just 2 systems (doesn't that sound spoiled?) and would rather tweak them than to mix and match several pieces time after time.

Let others enjoy what vintage pieces have to offer.

I've been selling off pieces here and there but this past week a fellow AK'er came along and gave several of my old pieces a new home all in one fell swoop.

I thought I was ready for the above mentioned reasons but still, to my surprise, I feel like I just sold my soul. I did what I had to do and I know that, but still, I'll miss my stuff.

Just getting things off my chest. Thanks.................R1:music::yes:

Sometimes your possessions own you, other than you owning your possessions.

I too, have thinned the herd dramatically, but still need to thin out a few pieces, and at least 3 or 4 large speaker pairs.

I figure if I can get my stash to a more manageable level, when a deal too good to pass up appears, I'll have the room, and the cash (hopefully) to jump on it.

Passing on gear to others just getting into the hobby can be greatly beneficial. I went from a respectable collection to sme really quality pieces by careful purchasing and planning. The new owners of my older stuff are now enjoying a musical re-awakening of their own, and the gear is much loved, much cared for, and most importantly, used on a regular basis, instead of sitting around inactive.

And best of all, I made a few new friends, and even turned a few folk on to AK.

Sorry for the blues you're experiencing. But take light in the fact your older kit is giving someone else plenty of happiness and enjoyment, and you have a bit more elbow room and kitty cash to experiment with tube rolling, cabling, new records you might not have bought, or different gear you may not have had the chance to own due to lack of cash or lack of space.

Cheers, my good buddy.

But you are spreading joy and entertainment to others. What can be more satisfying than taking a great piece of gear that is collecting dust and letting it do what it do -- please it's owner? Unfortunately, you don't get to see people enjoying your gear, but then again, when I get rid of my spare wives, I really don't want to see others enjoying them.

All kidding aside, balance is important in all aspects of life. Your gear went to good homes it seems and owning your hobby seems better than the hobby owning you. Your soul is better off with less conflicts.

Damn, am I in that boat!

Gotta let some things go, and with all the emotional attachment, it is difficult.

I often wonder who would be willing to load up all my gear when I go to the great AKFEST in the sky.....:scratch2:

We've all felt this pull. Hoarding vs. collecting. There's no easy answer.

Good luck.

You're all making it easier and I "Thank You". I sense a common emotion here.

It's funny... I was thinking this exact same thing today. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing the same very soon. You can only use so much stuff at one time.:thmbsp:

I've been doing exactly the same, and I am down to two complete rigs (plus three receivers as "backups" that I don't think I am able to let go). :tears:

It feels a lot better that way - I don't miss any of the stuff that I have passed on (well, except perhaps that rack of SPECs :music:).

The best thing about getting rid of stuff (mine has all gone locally on CL) is that you meet new people, introduce them to a new hobby and vintage audio, and often recruit new members to AK. :tresbon:

Roadie,

I feel your pain. I have always been a big packrat about everything. It is truly a liberating feeling when you unload a bunch of stuff. The biggest problem is more stuff seems to take it's place faster than you can get rid of the old stuff. It seems like a constant struggle to keep life some what neat and orderly.

Glad your feeling better about your accomplishment of decluttering. Thanks for your thread, it motivates me and many others I'm sure.:thmbsp:

Gotta have "backups" I won't be letting go of my SX-1250 or 9090:D
Now I have to start moving some speakers:scratch2:
