Reworking a Pilot 602

specialidiot

Break Glass, Smoke Lucky
Last spring I acquired a nice Pilot 602 from Redboy. I've finally cleared out all of the little projects in front of it, so it is time to get busy, as they say.

My goal is not to do a strip to the chassis, polish and rebuild. I simply want to clean it up a bit, refresh the caps and replace whatever needs replacing.

I'll use this thread to track my progress, ask questions, etc.

Here's the victim:

Here is a shot from above. It shows what kind of grunge I have to clean up. Doucanoe was kind enough to test tubes for me, the empty sockets are the ones that weren't up to snuff. Thanks to Barter Town, I have a full supply.

Over the last two days I've replaced the three cans and the rectifiers.

Here it is as cleaned up as its going to get and with the new cans in place. I'm afraid to scrub any more for fear of removing more screen printing than I already have.

Under C1 is a pair of 600 ohm 25 watt resistors in parallel. You can tell that they put off a lot of heat. I have some wire to replace, and I think I'll replace that cap too.

Next I'll replace the burnt wires and this 2 section cap with new electrolytics.

I have some orange drop caps and some 1 watt resistors coming for more fun next week!

looking good!!!! Your aware that receiver was designed to play simulcasts of am and fm stations simultaneously? Just checking.

Steve

So... you could listen to two stations at once! That would be cool, right? :D

Nice work in there, Jeff! Looks to me like this one's found a good home. It would still be sitting on a garage shelf if I still had it.

yes .. this was before the common availability of FM Stereo broadcasts. During certain programing one channel would be played on FM and the other on AM. I believe this model requires an external multplex adaptor to receive FM stereo.

Of course the simulcasting no longer occurs but rumor has it these type of reciever have excelent AM tuners because the they needs to have wide bandwidth to pair up with the FM section. If you can find an AM station broadcasting with decent fidelity this would be the reciever to listen to it with.

Great job you're doing there on that 602; you're motivating me to get back to restoring mine. Thanks!

No variac here. I built a lightbulb variac and I'm not sure that I used it right...

Yeah I get the concept but I still don't trust them. I may pull the trigger on one on ebay so the MN chapter of AK has one.

No progress tonight... been stuck on a work project that I hoped to finish earlier. I hope for tomorrow - the weekend for sure!

Smoke or Sweet music?

Find out tomorrow.... Everything is done, I've picked through all of the tight spots to make sure nothing is touching that shouldn't be, all of the solder joints are nicely done, and there isn't anything left hanging.

I DeOxit'd the pots and switches, and installed the tubes. Speaker wires are connected......

I'd fire it up tonight but I want the DeOxit to fully dry.

Stay tuned....

You have more patience than I do, being soooo close to powering up after all that work.

Good luck, she should sound real sweet.
