So on Sunday night the gf and I headed down to Baltimore from Philly to pick up my Thiel 03a's from a co-worker of Eric Clark who was nice enough to bring them from North Carolina for Rich (HomerJSimpson). Laura, my gf, was a saint because the traffic on 95 was hell. It took us about 3 hours to go about 120 miles and about 3.5 hours to get back. We left about 2:30 p.m. and arrived home just before 9:30 p.m.
I bought these back in January from Rich so I was glad to finally get them here. Rich was very patient with me, as I have had many questions over the last 8 months, as well as a couple of attempted deliveries that just did not work out because of this or that.
The speakers came with their original shipping boxes and packing materials as well as the literature, which certainly helped me to make the decision to buy them. I oiled them up with some furniture oil last night and they look great. Unfortunately I took the pictures before I oiled them up so I will have to take more. There is a little bit of water damage on one of the speakers which can be seen in the pictures, but other than that they are in pretty darn good shape for being almost 30 years old. A grill support was also broken in the transport which is hardly noticeable and since it looks as though there was some paint spilled on one of the grills I think sometime in the near future I will order some new grills from Thiel.
Rich was able to refoam the mids and woofers for me so they will take some time break in. These are the heaviest speakers I have moved around! My first impression is that these are some outstanding speakers. I don't know if they have the dynamics that my Magnepan MG-1's have, but they certainly have the best bass of any speaker I have ever heard, which isn't saying a whole lot since I don't have a ton of experience with different speakers, but nonetheless I was very impressed. At first I didn't think that the woofer was working, but then I listened closely and could not believe how tight the bass was. Fortunately, and unfortunately, these speakers are also much more detailed than the Maggies and thus show flaws in some of the poorer recordings I have and I believe they show the flaws in my Marantz TT. Just doesn't sound as clean as it did with the Maggies, but I am enjoying the detail.
I am still working with placement. I know Thiels like to be away from the side and front walls. Currently they are about 3.5 feet away from the side walls and about 2 feet away from the front walls. I have messed with the toe in a bit, but haven't been able to tell a huge different with them toed in. I am going to try moving them close to the side walls and then closer together to see what differences I can tell.
Eventually, when I am not in school, and actually have a job that pays me a salary, I might have them re-veneered, but that's in the future. Right now, I am just going to enjoy listening to them, and the fact that I have some quality speakers that could last me a long time.
The better of the two condition wise
The bottom right side you can see where the plywood split as the line is not quite straight
