Holy hi-fi, Batman!

Well, yesterday evening a couple of us had a listening session at a church, where we brought a bunch of gear and let it rip.

The little gathering was held at Hope Presbyterian Church in Virginia, MN. Fellow AK'er iflopdanutz was in the area (from Oregon), and it was, as always, fun to meet another AK member. Also in attendance was Boy Wonder, his friend Corey, and one of my good friends, Bill Mohar.

Speakers in use that evening were my JVC zero9, KEF C75, Wharfedale Emerald 97, as well as Bob's Equasound and Technics SB-X700 which had received his special rebuild treatment.

Electronics included Bob's SAE mk Ib, Kenwood L-07M, NAD 5000, JVC (something or other) CDP, Adcom GFA-6000, and my Yaqin MC-10L and VK-2100.

Music encompassed everything from theatrical sound tracks, live performance video game music, rock, jazz, and country.

Of course I took some pictures, and the quality must be excused (I selected the wrong ISO and shutter speed for the venue), but here is the best of the bunch. The last three pics are of just about everything (1/2-ton in total) loaded up in the back of Bob's van. He had to drive home at about 15MPH just to keep the suspension from bottoming out.

I guess you can now say that gear has been blessed.. or is it you've been blessed with gear... :D

Calm yourself Robin, if you get a woody in those tights it's going to be embarrassing!

More seriously though, I wish I was there to hear that! Church acoustics can be wonderful.

Now that looks like fun!

I would love to hear some nice gear set-up in a church sometime. That must have made for some interesting acoustic projection.

Churches can sound great. The Swallow Hill Music Association in Denver acquired a church space for their concert venue. I've seen Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Slaid Cleaves, and Jimmy LaFave there and we all marveled at the acoustics.

If you see iflopdanutz again, say hey.

I'm not entirely sure how he pulled it off, but Bob arranged for use of the Church.

Playing Beethoven's Ninth through the zero9's was positively eerie. If it were not for the amps clipping at the crecendos, it would have been near on impossible to tell it from a live performance. As it was, making your way from the sanctuary to the choir loft, it was a live performance.

The only surprise, to me, was how well the Wharfedale's performed. I know that they are very decent in smaller venues, but they did not seem daunted by the large room, and in fact seemed to open up even more with the space.

Great use of hymnals to prop up the Adcom amp! I've had reason, several times, to set up systems in church buildings, and it really is a cool experience to hear music with all the ambiance and architecture around you.

I think my church's auditorium is used pretty much 24/7/365, so there goes that idea for me here...

You need a bigger truck, and I need a bigger church.

je (actually, I helped set up our church's Mackie/QSC/Wharfedale system)

:scratch2: note to self. Buy a church building for my first house.

Really cool setup, although it looks like the carpet in there is the same shade of orange as my chair. :D

How did the Yaquin gear sound? I was thinking about getting a MC-100B. It must have been a great experience. IMO acoustics is the most important part of a system.
