Another "Pair" of Frazier Speakers ...

Chip - HP

Super Member
This morning I picked up what I thought were a pair of Frazier speakers ... but now I am not so sure ... I think that they are the same model ... maybe a consumer variation of the Black Box (they appear to have the same cabinet dimensions as one of the Black Box models in one of PM's brochures) ... but the cabinet finishes are different and the serial numbers are pretty far apart (11273 on the left and 7696 on the right)

The cabinets are 23 7/8" W x 11 7/8" D x 19" H and there are four holes on the bottom of each cabinet for mounting feet.

My black boxes measure 24" h x 11 7/8" deep x 19 1/2" wide. Looking at yours, the difference seems to be :
1. early version in plywood instead of fiberboard (later versions I believe)
2. porting at back instead of front
3. speaker location appears woofer centered and tweeter offset. My black boxes have the woofer below the tweeter and centered in a verticle line.

Open them up and see what markings are on the drivers.

Here are the insides ... SN 11273 on the left and 7696 on the right ... the driver diameters are the same in each ... 8" and 3.5" ... no numbers visible on the drivers other than 3395 over 270117 on the 3.5" driver on the left.

Too big for Monte Carlo's, but that looks like the same tweeter as mine. Wish I could find one layin' around.

Frazier Del Mar speakers.

Nice loudspeakers!
FWIW: I was in Lowes the other day and noticed that they sell legs very similar to the ones in PM's scan...

i have the same del mars.....but i also have what appears to be the exact same thing....just smaller. same rear ports - a small 6" or 8" with a little tweeter - both drivers are painted black...with no markings as being frazier.

are these monte carlos?

Got any pictures?

I have a pair of 8 inch Frazier speakers that I've been wanting to get into diy cabinets, they're blue. From the photos posted here it appears the cabs are just boxes with slots at the rear panel. Is that the original Frazier design, and if so, can you post the dimensions of that slot and the value of the capacitor?

I just brought my Frazier Concerto's out of storage last night, paired them with my newly aquired Dynaco ST-70 tube amp. All I can say is it is a match made in audio heaven, Joe Satriani sounded so good, you would of thought he was playing live in the room. :thmbsp:

It's not just a slot. Its a HELMHOLTZ RESONATOR. Paul Klipsch used a similar design with the Cornwall and the HIP.

here are my pictures.

the drivers are blacked out or show no name...but look like other fraziers ive seen.

while listening to them....one of them seems to drop the deepest bass on occassion......so im thinking of replacing that big dynaco thing like i saw in another thread.

are these frazier drivers?

i was/am considering pulling the drivers and replacing the woofer? with an ev full range or wolverine.

opinions?

Those are very early Monte Carlos, and the drivers are original. Leave them, just replace the capacitors. You might pull them to inspect the cloth/paper surrounds for holes, but that's not critical.

I have a pair just like them. From the early age of stereo, and a perfect match for that Sherwood!
