Info on Mirage SM-1?

Super Member
I just picked up from an estate sale a pair of Mirage SM-1 for $10.

So here are a few questions:

Can anyone flesh out / correct the info on these that I have gathered from the net (mainly Audiokarma, or course)?

Mirage's 1st speaker line included the SM-1
Designed by Kevin Voecks
Introduced in 1981 - sold until ?
2-way acoustic suspension design - 8" woofer with a 10-oz magnet and dome tweater (Peerless?)
They used a felt ring around the tweater to assist with dispersion
MSRP new was $400 / pair.

Max 200 W RMS
92db/W/m efficiency
Response 47Hz to 23kHz +/- 3dB
x-over at 3500Hz
System Resonance 55Hz
23"x9"x12"

I snagged the original english and french "owners manuals" and the warranty card (the warranty was 10-years on these!)

Recommended to be used with Mirage's "T-1" stand (anyone have dimensions or pictures?)

So the ones I got have near perfect enclosures (one small nick in a corner) but need re-foam. Does anyone know if one can use "standard" refoam kits for these? Note it appears that perhaps more than one LF driver was used on these speakers over the years - one was blue-coloured and mine are standard black-coloured. I suspect mine are a later version, there was a Hitatch recevier there as well that definately looked later than '81.

Any comments on these speakers? What little I have found on them seem to be fairly positive.

Thanks folks!

I remember having a pair back in the 80's and they were nice, smooth sounding speakers. The stand was low and angled the speaker slightly back. I think I have an old ad with a photo of the speaker on a stand if I can locate it.

Some of the earlier SM-1's had a felt tab glued to the grill cloth directly in front of the tweeter to soften it's output a bit. Mine definitely had the blue woofer cones.

I'll try to find you some additional information.

Thanks lab.

These ones have a felt ring glued around the tweeter itself. Following link is a parallel post with some pictures of the blue-coned woofer as well as I tried to summarize some of the info on Mirage and API, etc. that I have found on the net

It would be great if you could dig up that ad. I have seen a really poor photo of an ad, but a scan would be fantastic.

If anyone else out there happens to have a brochure? Strangely the "owners manual" I got doesn't mention any specs at all. I know it is not really critical, but it is for me a big part of the fun - finding out all you can about some of this older stuff.

Here's a 3rd version

SM-1 built by "Inception Audio" (I think these are very early versions). They have a control for the tweeters.

And also a link that includes description of Inception Audio link to Mirage:

that's a philips belgian dome i think. i've had the sm.5 , sm2.5,
the mirage subwoofer(actually a 2x10 bass module) and the 750(a 2.5 w/ a vifa tweeter) mirage speakers are very musical indeed.

I think this is the subwoofer here, right?

The SM-1's finally made it to the top of my list and have had their refoam. Sound excellent.

To help out one of our fellow AKr's I offer the attached. I'll see if I can locate the 'owner's manual' and scan it too.

BTW, sold these back in '09 for, I believe, $90.

thanks very much for posting those two scans! They clearly illustrate the two morphs of this speaker discussed (inferred) in earlier posts - the polypropylene cone and Philips tweeter are seen in the "improved" version in the review PDF; the original drivers are seen in the ad PDF.

Cool e-nuff.

PS one of the two woofers in the ones that I had was bad (open VC) - I replaced it with an utterly generic woofer I had on hand... and the sound quality was virtually identical. This attests more to the forgiving nature of acoustic suspension alignments to some mismatch of driver T-S parameters and system performance - and also to blind luck (in terms of driver sensitivity) than it does of anything else :-)
