Sanyo JCX 2900K, very impressed!

This poor thing languished on the local CL for about 4 days before I finally drove out to Troutdale and picked it up. I got it from the widow of the original owner, who mentioned that here husband had been anal about saving the boxes for any products that he purchased. Good thing for me, as I got this receiver in the original box with the packing materials owners manual. Whoo-hooo!! Other than the POs DL # in very small letters on the upper left corner of the face, it is pristine. A quick bath, a little F-100, and quick workout with the air compressor, and check it out, a very sweet unit.
I have to say that this is probably the best built 120wpc receiver I've ever seen. Two ample power transformers (true dual mono) and four 10000uF filter caps make up the main power supply. Nice. It has nice big heatsinks, with four ouptuts per channel. I hate to admit it, but this unit is better built than either my beloved Marantz 2330 or Sansui 9090DB, and other than the vinyl veneer, its build is on par with the Pioneer SX-1050. It weighs just a hair under 52 lbs.
I haven't yet purchased a service manual, so all of the adjustments are as found. It had about 5mV DC on either channel, the heatsinks stay just a couple of degrees above ambient, even after being on all day, and it gets strong, clear FM reception.
Sonically, I love it! This thing makes even my crappy speakers sound good, and my good speakers sound great. The sound is very dynamic, clear and well defined, with plenty of headroom. This baby brings the power! The tuner section doesn't leave much to be desired, either. Nice clear reception, with the kind of imaging I've only heard from few tuners/receivers.
Here are some pics.

it was a big mistake to sell my sanyo jcx-2600kr. this sanyo line is so beautifull. i was so impressed by the build quality. i'm searching for the 2900 for so long now.
congrats with your finding :thmbsp:

You are right Sir!!
I found one of these at a yard sale this summer for $20.00 it was dirty and every lamp was out but one, and the vinyl was peeling off the cabinet.
But after a couple of hours of cleaning, I was amazed at this receiver. The FM section is just great, and the phono section rivals my Pioneer SX 1980 and my Sansui G 901, maybe even a little better.
At first I thought, Sanyo? isn't that a microwave? or a clock? But I agree, the build quality is fantastic, starting with the dual transformers, who else does that?

It easily drives two pair of HPM 100 speakers and never gets hot. I am going to find new lamps for it and put on a nice rosewood veneer.
I will not be selling or trading this one, and I am keeping my eye out for another.

Oh yes, a keeper for sure. It's every bit as good as, or better than any other receiver of similar power that I've seen or owned.

Congrats Tarior. The 2900 is one of the very few dual tranny receivers I can think of. Very much under-appreciated except for here!!

Now you need a Sanyo TT to go with it. There are some nice ones out there :)

Agreed! Oddly enough I was always a Technics man in the day but the one component of theirs I NEVER owned was one of their TTs. I had a Sanyo starting out and it was a wonderful unit!!

Very well constructed piece of equipment. I think this an Sanyo's other offerings, the Plus 130 and Fisher RS-1060 are the true flagships of this general power class. If you're looking for another of this power level with dual trannies check out the Onkyo TX-8500.

I would like to know the best (reasonable) replacement filter caps. Seems an odd squatty size, but there's space underneath there for a bit taller.

Thanks to SanyoFreak for identifying the 2 sets of outputs used: mine has the 2SB681/2SD551 sets, and it is cold as a cucumber no matter what I do to it. Like magic, it never gets hot at all, even when shuddering the windows. Actually just the top-front panel lights heat up... :headscrat

Talk about overbuilt. :thmbsp::thmbsp: A summertime amp for sure not a cooker. :D

Heat ages gear, so this one may still be in spec long after other 120wpc-range gear is past overdue for remedial attention. Maybe they all started the same...

Thanks Tarior for the pic of the box with specs which I read as daaaam good; still think it's a contender for absurdly underreported wpc though:

[] 120 watts per channel min. continuous RMS power, into 8 ohm load, from 20-20,000 Hz.
[] Less than 0.8% total harmonic distortion.
[] 1.6 microvolt FM sensitivity (9.3dBf).
[] 73dB signal/noise ratio (stereo).
[] 1.0dB capture ratio.

I have only one negative so far, a wobbly tuner wheel so changing directions tuning gives that lag-time, loose feel. Gonna have to rig up a support on it. Seems lots of receivers have this worn shaft/weak mount syndrome. None of my Pioneers or Luxman yet. And the plastic top vents will get upgraded to wire mesh. Might even add more flywheel weight to the tuner knob.

peeeeeeeks...

Nice show! I wish the four filter cans were mounted so they can be seen. I also like the Stanley-style (6.3v) bulbs over the fuse bulbs in Marantz and bi-pin in Yamaha.

This was Sanyo's statement receiver. Problem with Sanyo which makes them underrated is that they were more a discount brand/lower tier brand in their marketing in the USA. Back then, Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, Kenwood were fixtures in better hi-fi dealers. Sanyo didn't limit their distribution to better outlets and cultivate dealer relationships. Result, an underrated, rare, off the wall classic receiver. Later on, Sanyo did try marketing higher end product lines to exclusive dealers like the Plus series and Ultrx! They had a hard time getting dealers for these lines.

my uncle just picked up one of these for me yesterday, i'm very excited to get it sometime this week! the seller also noted that the tuning was a little sluggish and slipped if he tried to spin it too fast.

thanks to audiokarma, FBOW, the sleepers are gradually becoming sleepers in name only! i just saw a Mitsu C20 preamp on the 'bay for half a grand...
