Vintage 1970 price list scans

jimbofish

for TRULY GREAT MUSIC
Attached are scans of some price lists from August of 1970 that I though I'd share with everyone. At the time, I was in Vietnam and wrote to my dad asking for prices on audio components I was thinking of ordering. He and my mom did some comparison shopping for me and what you see is what they sent me. I'd forgotten I'd even had them yet.

Most of the prices are from Pecar's when they were on Morang on the east side of Detroit. They've since moved to Troy or Rochester. Pecars' was more upscale than the others. They had a McIntosh room and they also carried custom speaker cabinets that you could have drivers of your choice installed in.

Korvette's was, obviously, EJ Korvette's Department Store. This one was on Gratiot and 12 Mile. Audioland was farther out near 16 Mile. Audioland had a lot of Sony and JBL stuff.

The 'Yours' prices were the prices I could get them for from various gov't exchanges and overseas distributors. Most were only offered to servicemen.

Eventually I ended up with Pioneer SX-9000 receiver, Sony SS9500 speakers, Sony TC-127 tape deck, and PE 2040 TT. I had them shipped directly to my home, rather than to 'Nam. The only one I don't have any longer is the Pioneer. It was stolen from my house in 1980.

Thanks for that. I've a number of the listed Sony pieces, apparently close to $3000 worth at retail pricing.

That's at 1970 dollars. I think minimum wage back then was around $2/hr.... and you could buy a new car for $3000.

I used to buy albums at that Korvettes. My Dad bought his first stereo in '68 at the Audioland store about a quarter mile south of 16 mile. It was a Sherwood S-7600 for over $400 and he still has it in the same exact spot. Thanks for posting the list.

You're welcome.

Yep, that's the same Audioland store where my folks got the price quotes. My friend got a Sony STR-?055 there in the mid '70s... probably when they were on close-out sale. Building is still there but Audioland isn't.

Spent many an hour browsing the record bins at that Korvette's. Every weekend they'd have certain labels on sale, like Atlantic and all their sub-labels, or Columbia, etc. Every so-often, they'd have the coveted 'all-label' sale. Somewhere I have a business card from Korvette's audio dept. that I'll have to scan. :music:

I didn't understand. We're those from 1970? Or from "The Seventies"?

August 1970. On a couple of the Pecar's price lists you'll notice 870 or 570 in the lower right corner, designating the month and year the list was printed. All the pages were gathered in Aug. 1970. I still have the envelope and the letter from my dad that came with them. :smoke:

Any of the models listed may have been current models for a year or two on either side of Aug 1970.
