SPEC System + Wharfedale E90s

I also posted this in the speaker forum but hang out here more and thought the Pioneer gang might want to see as well

So, I’ve had a chance to listen to them and…

I’m very happy!

Admittedly, it took a little time to adjust my EQ so they sound right to my ears with my system in my space. I chose to adjust the EQ as opposed to the high/low controls on the fronts of the speakers. Compared to my Celestion DL10s, the Wharfedales have a little more in the extreme high end and high-mid range. They have a much larger sound stage and are so efficient that one watt per side is almost too loud in my space.

And, to me, they also look fantastic, have a look at the pic and see what you think…

Very nice. One of the guys at work has a set of E50's? I think. I haven't heard them but he seems to like them.

I like your SD1100. You gotta love the scope action.

Thanks Dennydog. The SD-1100 is a rare and beautiful piece for sure.

I wonder what the E50s weigh... The reason I say this is that the E90s are 90 lbs each (thus the model number?)...

ZOINX!!!................ what model eq is that?

It's a Pioneer SG-9800. Very snazzy with the LED lit sliders but the SG-9500 is more reliable. If you don't have electronics experience, don't buy an SG-9800 unless you can check it out first. They are prone to broken push button switches and slider issues.

It's a great EQ if you can get one in good shape or can fix one up to make it in good shape.

Nice SD-1100 , never seen one in person. You are correct on the SG-9800 electronics. I bought one that "worked great" off of ebay. I have recapped the electrolytics, replaced a slider pot, and still have power supply problems. I am afraid that two of the big IC's inside might be shorted run firecracker hot. Something is pulling the - supply rail into the positive. Of course the LED's are out due to the power problem.

The pushbuttons are OK though! Hope I can get a better schematic printed so I can fix it .....so far it is kicking my rear. I would love to add it to my rack since I am trying to get some Pioneer silver pieces together.

Nice touch with the DT-400 on top. :thmbsp:

Thanks.

I like the looks of it better than the later models but wish that it fit in my rack (not that there's any room)

I have also done something special with the DT-400 to increase it's power handling capability. I modified one of the rack mount power bars at the bottom of the rack by adding a 15 amp 120V actuated relay inside. I attached an extra power cord to the power bar and connected it to the coil of the relay. This extra power cord gets plugged into the back of the DT-400. The contacts in the relay interrupt the power to the power bar outlets. I just plug all of my stuff into the power bar and the DT-400 can switch all of it on and off safely.

See the attached... Maybe I should create a separate post for this???

I too like the looks of the Dt-400 better than later models. I had that timer as part of my original system back in the late 70's. I used it as my alarm clock. My brother recently found one in mint condition for $10 or $20.

I have 1 problem that you may be able to help me with....I also like to use the timer as an "on/off" switch for my system. I just push the left lever to the "through" position. The problem is that there seems to be no way to disable the timer from turning on my system (once a day) Whatever time is set on the timer...it clicks the power on at that time. Like a normal alarm clock, you should be able to disable the alarm from coming on every time it reaches the time you set. I hope this makes sense.

Is there a certain position that I should set the controls on this timer? I keep the dial in the "present time" position, and the left lever in the "auto/on/off" position.

Thanks for the help

Nice!

I forgot to mention I like the relay you came up with. :thmbsp:

Yes by all means start another post as to exactly how you did that, and where to find the parts.

Nice setup you have there! :thmbsp: I am fortunate enough to own an SD1100 also You can just see it in my avatar, far right middle shelf. Picked it up for $40 NZD years ago, got me a bargain I thinks!

With that kind of power driving the E-90´s you´re gonna blow your roof off one of these days.

Bet it sounds just great, though bass may not go as deep as you could reasonably expect.

Typically when the SPEC 4 is registering about 1 watt per side, it's almost too loud. If I get anywhere close to the 140 watts per side that the E90s are rated for, things definitely get a little crazy!!!
When driven flat, the bass is a little lacking but that's what the EQ is for. They are the first set of speakers I've owned where I love the sound and the appearance equally.

I don't think you'll be able to find a solution using only the DT-400. You'll probably have to plug a switched power bar into the DT-400 and use the switch on the power bar. The owner's manual is in the Pioneer manual scan database but I don't think you'll find the answer there...
