Ortofon STM-72 Step up transformer????

Mark W.

Nut house of the Universe
A while back I was gifted a Ortofon STM-72 MC cartridge step up transformer. I find little info on line about the current use of this interesting dodad.

I know it originally was designed to work with the MC-10 cartridge. I know it has the following spec's

Frequency range: 20-50,000 Hz
Pickup Impedance: 2ohm
Load Impedance: 10-50 k ohm

It has two RCA jacks on one end and a short 12" cable with two RCA plugs on the other end the body is a little longer then a C sized battery and about the same diameter.

What I'm hoping to find out is the possible use of this step up with a modern MC cartridge. Specifically a Goldring Eroica H with a 2.5mv output it has an output Impedance of 77 ohms and a load impeadance of 47K ohm

Sure I could just plug it in and try it but I really don't feel like smoking anything.

ANYONE know anything that would help.

And yes I see these for sale for WAY more then I would have ever guessed but that ain't where I'm going.

The brochure have only a paragraph about it and limited specs which are:

Frequency response 10Hz-50kHz
Voltage ratio 1:60
Impedance ratio 1:3600
Recommended load impedance for stereo 47kΩ/100kΩ for CD-4

It is designed to receive a signal of about 0.07mV and amplify it to 3.5mV and plug into a standard phono (MM) input. Both those levels were 1kHz-5cm/sec.

Now the Goldring you mention is a high output MC cartridge and should plug in directly to a MM phono input. It is designed to see a 47KΩ of the standard phono input and puts out the correct level for the amplification from a MM amp. So there is no need for the STM-72 for that cartridge.

You may have to turn it up a bit more with the Goldring, but you should be able to fully power your system with this HO MC cartridge.

Yes you can use ths STM-72 with a modern MC cartridge and it will work great, but you need to use it with a Low Output moving coil cartridge. Anything below about 0.5mV would like this transformer.
