monstrous Sherwood speakers

Hello folks:

I've been meaning to post about these for about three weeks. It was then that I saw this big ol' pair of veenered boxes at the swap pile at the town 'transfer station'. I rushed over, thinking they might be Wharfedales or something like that. I was a bit disappointed to see they were Sherwoods, probably late 1960's vintage. Decided to lug them home anyway (no mean feat, they weigh about 75-80 lbs each). Turns out that they are 4-ways with a cone MR in a sealed enclosure (basket), an unidentifiable tweeter (presumably cone), an 8" "midbass" (open basket), and a 10" woofer firing out the rear. Grilles are not removable, but the back of the upper chamber was. Here is a really poor photos (available light in the basement) of the front.

Does anyone here know anything about these monsters? They're clearly labeled "Sherwood" on a label on the back, but there is no model number given. Any info is appreciated.

Here's the back...

also available light...

note the nonstandard, "Euro-nanny" spacing of the binding posts :-(

and the insides (top chamber)

The sealed back driver is on the left, tweeter middle (barely visible), and I peeled back some of the insulation from the "midbass". The XO (mounted on the back) is partly visible too.

Nicely made speakers. They sound OK at a quick listen. Bass seemed quite boomy, but I tried 'em on an EL84pp amp... something with a higher DF might've been more sympathetic.

These are TOO BIG for Casa Hardy and so I will be making them available on the "partswap" board ISO a loving home.

Mark,

They may be the Tanglewood SR-4W, which according to the info I have, used two 10 inch woofers, and was a four way design. That was Sherwoods top of the line in 1963 and sold for $220.

hmmm.... thought I only saw one woofer in the back. Looks like a 10". I'll check again to see whether there are two.

Looks like a litic cap.......ought to change that. The chokes are set at angles from each other as they should be, that is a good sign. The woofs look like some I pulled out of some Fullers or Fullman, something like that. Probably OEM Utahs. I bet they are real efficient and would do well with a small SE amp like was found in consoles. The OPTs tended to be on the small side and the lows suffered from lack of bandwidth, so the speakers were made boomy to round the sound out.
