Hales Speakers thread

Apparently relatively unheard of on AK?

"The best loudspeaker no-ones heard of" is apparently true?

If you have Hales post them here!!

These are my Hales Revelation 3 Loudspeakers.
I have had them for a few weeks now and have been meaning to post some good pictures of them (still don't have them yet). I tried to take some photos of them the night I got them home, as i got them in the door and only managed a few before my battery died on my camera.(i thought)
Well it turns out the camera is junk but, I got these off of the memory card that the camera contained.

I got these pictures of one speaker but my camera died before I got to finish shooting this speaker or it's mate.
These speakers sound even better than they look; and these pictures don't even come close to doing them justice.
I will have to borrow my good camera from work and do a real shoot of both speakers with decent lighting; but I wanted to get these out there and see IF there are any other lucky Hales owners on AK.

The grills ARE removable, I just have not undertaken them yet as it isn't as straightforward as just pulling on the grills to remove there is a grid supporting the fabric.
I found these online to temporarily satisfy your cravings..

There's not very much information really available online but I 'JUST' got a technical response directly to an inquiry I made of Paul Hales himself.
he has a new company while geared at a different market it appears he has created some more incredible speakers, not that I could afford them!

So do I currently have the ONLY pair of Hales on Ak? Some tech measurements!!

The front baffle is 4" thick and this is the reason for the depth of the front grill and probably part of the reason that these speakers just 'dissapear' which is a pretty good trick considering their size!

All other walls/dividers/bracing are 1" MDF.
All internal wiring and binding posts are cardas, stock.
here is a good review in stereophile with advanced measurements if anyone is interested...

The hales revelation 3 is an amazing speaker, the more I use them the better I like them!

Hoping people will see this and give any they may come across an audition; you will not be dissapointed!

qbone,
I'm glad that you are enjoying your Revelation 3s. :thmbsp:

I listened to a pair of these about 2 weeks ago.
I bought an Altec 411 subwoofer from a local(to me)guy who had advertised them on Aussie eBay.Since he only lived less than a mile from me,it was a no-brainer(I was also the only bidder).

We listened to three systems. His mother's(which I only got to hear on am radio). It was the one I wanted to listen to the most.It was actually his father's.

The Hales were in a specially built listening-room.The rest of the system was a Wadia two piece CD source and a tube integrated. It was neutered, sterile and not my cup of tea.

I really think that the problem was the amp.I should take around my Kenwood L-A1 integrated,or some other amps I have here and ask him to hook them up.

I was familiar with the glowing reviews of the Hales, and was looking forward to hearing something special.
System synergy strikes again. :tears:

Those are excellent speakers...I never managed any as i dont like them being shipped, especially the ones with concrete baffles....those are keeper speakers.

Not a surprise to me, with a sensitivity of 86 and a nominal rating of 4 ohm with dips down to @2.5 ohms in a couple of freq ranges these power hungry speakers are better for high power, high current solid state designs.
It would take one whopping tube amp to get them to 'wake up'.
Being as I run high quality, modern manufacture 200 WPC Monos stable to 2 ohms these speakers are ideal for my amplification which is more than up to the task of their tricky load.

I was fortunate and found mine in beautiful condition, with all original packing and literature, within a 5 mile drive of my home. Shipping 100 Lb speakers isn't really to my taste either:no:
Thanks for the compliments guys!
I wish more AK'ers lived local so some of you guys could hear these things!!!:tresbon:
Thanks for viewing!

qbone,
I'm sure that was the problem.
I have to wonder some times at the choices people make when assembling a system. :nono:

The guy with the Hales that I related has(like me)been an enthusiast for over thirty years. He has a penchant for tubes.

None of his systems even slightly impressed me.No soundstage,no dynamics,no bass,no low-level detail.Admittedly they were turned-on from cold.No warm-up.

Lots of good equipment.Lots of poor choices of component combinations.I almost felt sorry for him.He had about $60,000 invested in his two systems and neither of them sounded even half-way interesting.
A very nice person.
I'm not impressed by what's in a system,just by what it puts-out.They don't all put-out.

Still enjoying the revelation 3's more than any other speaker i have yet heard to date.
Hope some other ak'ers have the chance to experience them and post here.
cheers,
tal

I've owned the Rev 3s as well. Simply fantastic sound and unreal build quality. I sold them to a friend and have regretted it ever since.

If you can source some spare drivers, it might be a good idea to put some away in case you blow one up.

Bump since it appears I am no longer the only Hales Rev. 3 owner here anymore, to try to prompt the 'other' owner into posting up some of his photo's here:naughty:
cheers,
tal

My Hales System II Signature speakers. I worked with Paul Hales at his first manufacturing facility in Brentwood, Calif. I was the shop foreman for building the cabinets, so I made myself a pair. Still have and enjoy them so very much. Until a few days ago they were powered by NAD equipment. I just upgraded to McIntosh this week; a C27 preamp and an MC7150 power amp.

Just picked up a pair at auction. Still trying to figure out if I want to work out some issues with them and bring them back to life , or sell the good parts. If anybody is in need of anything, let me know!

Have you been able to listen to a pair that are working properly? they are truly amazing; crisp, excellent spatial representation, and virtually vibration free, even at high volume. I believe Paul Hales designed them especially with jazz music in mind. I would say, definitely not for listening to music with lots of heavy bass. If you get the opportunity to listen to a pair that are working properly, you'll likely want to invest the time and money to, as you said, "bring them back to life".

I purchased a replacement tweeter for one speaker and glued back a loose, vibrating dust cap on the woofer of the other. Now that I’ve had time to listen to them in working order, I have fallen in love with these things. I purchased them simply out of curiosity, but I believe they may be keepers.

That is awesome ! glad to hear that you were able to listen to their potential. if you have the original tweeters that's great. if not, I have emailed the supplier and have received the price of the original tweeters. They've really gone up in price since we manufactured the speakers. They're about $218 now.

Dynaudio 17w75EXT 4ohm woofer 7". (from Dynaudio support) We can order these for you. They are $218 each plus shipping.
