What are they?

I've managed to get my nephew hooked on searching for older gear. He sent me this picture of speakers he found. He asked me what they were, but frankly I am a bit stumped. They appear to be e-stat/ribbon hybrids. They look familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on whose. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure they're early Apogees of some sort although I don't know the model... Later ones were hybrids with conventional cone woofers built into the stand.

Awesome speakers although they're not easy to drive - you need a hefty amp capable of dumping some serious current into these. Many people feel that a sub is needed too.

I thought they looked like Apogees, but I was under the impression that all the early Apogees had trapezoidal mid/bass ribbons. So if they weren't Apogees, I wondered who had developed this alternate design. Infinity had similar vertical ribbon (planer) arrays, but always went with conventional drivers for the lower end. There were any number of boutique builders, but these seemed too familiar to be from one of them.

They might be the baby Amazings. I know the big ones had 10 segments to the ribbons, and stood over 5' tall, but I think Carver also produced a smaller version. If that is what they are, weren't they a pain in the butt to drive? It figures my nephew would find these AFTER I sold my Phase Linear D-500.

I vote Carver, too.

Either way, get them if the price is right. Then start looking for an appropriate amp.

is that two woofers i see in there?

as well as a smaller drive, perhaps a midrange unit? if yu guys already saw them...sorry to disturb your musing over the speakers.:)

No. Limited baffle, not open baffle.

The Platinums had 4 woofers with a 60" ribbon, some had 48" with 3 woofers.
