Sanyo DAD 8 CD player.

Last week I had the pleasure to fix deaner33's Sanyo DAD 8 VERTICAL POWER LOAD (Ooooooooo!! :thmbsp:) CD player. It played hardly any cd you put into it. It was by far one of the worst players I have ever worked on as far as construction goes. They do NOT want you to take this thing apart. It's built like a tank, with a zillion screws and a very heavy chassis. Yeah, they built them to last in the days.

Anyway, it's all fixed and reads even CDR's again. The usual clean, lube and VERY careful re-alignment of the entire servo system. A gem of a player, it actually sounds quite good! :music:

So I am sharing a few pics that I took, but alas not a step by step series. Sorry. The scope shows .8volts on a GOOD cd, which dropped to .5 on some new discs. I did not take more pics, but the RF pattern is now a healthy 1volt (spec) on a good cd and .8 on a cdr. Sweet.

It's going back home on friday, hope you enjoy it, Dean.

Sweeeeetttttt

What a pleasure to read about a Sanyo CD player that I was not even aware that they made.

I love the vertical players, and had an opportunity to pick up a Kyocera vertical that was not working for $50.00, but I declined as it was not working. It would load the CD and spin it then stop. It would not play the CD, staying in standby mode.

A little beat up cosmetically, but nice to look at.

I can probably still get it if I want to, as I think the seller still has it.

Whaddyathink??:D

Thanks Marc! I'll post some exterior pictures when I get it back if anyone's interested. Marc, we discussed the laser over the phone & you indicated it was tired. If I understand your post, after digging deeper & after the servicing the laser's not as tired as you originally thought?

If it can be brought back from the dead, Tinman's the one to do it.

That is correct. :thmbsp:

Well, I can't work miracles, but I'd like to think I'm pretty good at this.

That was my first CD Player. I purchased it for $349 in 1984 at Musicraft. It was not a great player, just an okay player.

Hey, I fixed MY Kyocera.... and even if not, $50 is low enough to recoup. Heck, I'd buy it.

I think compared to later players, MOST 1983 players are "OK". Some things most certainly improved over the next few generations. My Sony D-5 was quite a stir back then, but just OK by today's standards.

But it was MAGIC in the early 80's... :D

Better late than never - pictures

Big thanks to Tinman! Here is the DAD 8 with it's clothes back on. It sounds great. :music:

I've got a Hitachi DA-1000 that is pretty flaky. I have no clue what's wrong with it in general except that it has a little trouble reading and then tracking anything beyond 20 minutes into the cd. I assume a problem with the cd mech itself as the output is lovely when it does decide to play...I believe it's dual burr-browns (converters).

Found a Sanyo DAD8 like yours, in challenged condition cosmetically, and not sure if it works at all.

I just love those vertical CD players.

My question is whether or not it is worth the expense to purchase and repair (if necessary) on a sonic level?

Aesthetically, I enjoy looking at them.

Some unremovable scratches on the faceplate, but it can be cleaned to look almost good . . .

Cheers

Any of you have service manual for this beauty CD, Sanyo DAD8?
Have one, does not read CD at all!!

Any imput is useful!

Cheers!
