Dynaco A-25 model?

bhamham

Super Member
I happened to buy these yesterday but upon a few hours of research can't seem to determine which A-25 model they are. I can't find a pic of an A-25 that has the small tweeter like these have. The switch in back is a 5-way. They sound good but a recap would serve them well I think. I guess you get to the cross-over by pulling the woofer?

Can anyone help please? Also, any links to more info or any restoration threads would be appreciated.

Best wishes, Bruce

Is NOTHING sacred!!??

No way is that stock.....someone added on that little tweeter.

You need to perform an exorcism.

Is that why they went spinning in circles when I fired them up??? :)

If that tweeter's been added they did a good job to match all the screws and washers...

I concur. No way that supertweet is stock.

Unless you found some rare one-off. :scratch2:
Further investigation is required.

Is that the correct bass speaker in there? Doesn't look like it lines up with opening around edges. And is that a hole / gap in back of the speaker frame at 2PM?

Woofer looks correct & fine to me. And I think you're seeing either excess glue or sealant at the 2 o'clock position.
Although the staining of the baffle is kinda odd and haphazard.

Well ............. you'd know better than me. I thought the recess around the hole might be cut out to fit the edge of the basket. Just looks a bit "sloppy" to me. Of course I've got a pair of Harmon Kardon HK-40's that have the factory putty around the speakes that looks pretty sloppy too.

Yes, the 'hole' at 2:00 is a blotch of glue.

After do some more searching I found this...

I think I may have a 'ported' M25XL according to Dynacophil. The staining is a bit shoddy but the construction is very professional. All the fastenings are the same for all the drivers. The seller gave me the original manual for the A-25; and, it had a dynaco badge on one speaker, and the screw with the badge missing on the other. I'm fairly certain they're Dynacos... maybe just a variant they sold in Europe?

Dynaco A-25 Mk II

Well, the seller happened to phone a day after I bought them and asked if I wanted the speaker wires and that he had the advertisement that led him to buy them. He couldn't remember the exact year but thought it was early 1970s.

Here's a scanned copy...

I've listened to them for a couple of days now and find them very pleasing. I'm going to recap and refinish the veneering. I'll post some pics of the drivers once I have them out.

A few of the better vintage British speakers I've seen (Spendor BC-1), or own (B&W DM2), have a tweeter/supertweeter configuration. Was the British market really into the supertweeter, or not having a speaker 'roll off' ?

Cool find. I never knew this model existed.

Ahhhhh......

I did the old foot-in-mouth-trick again, huh!?

I would have never guessed that those Dynaco's were actually stock?

Pulled the drivers this morning... this is my first speaker restore so not sure if I'm doing things right so any help/comments very welcome!

Yes, Rolf, it is SEAS 5TV-HF - Woofer is H336 and the other tweeter is Type Dome 87 H

Here is crossover filter

The big cap is 8uF/50v and the little red one that feeds the 5TV-HF is 1.2uF/50v

What is recommended as to replacing them? I checked ESR and it seems OK. I measured a few of the resistors and they were not too out of spec

As this is my first time to open a set of speakers of course I managed to break something :) ... the flat brass connector to the negative terminal. Is this some kind of fuse? I don't suppose you can solder it together? I hope I haven't screwed things up! Thanks for any help.
