I have a SX 780 that I was considering for a recap. Do you have a recap list?

I'll make up a list based on the capacitors replaced, because what was listed in the manual and what I found in the receiver were slightly diifferent and I had to order several times to get everything.

Terrific, I really appreciate it. Any lookouts or tips that might help out are greatly appreciated. Did you source them all online, or a local supplier?

The video says Mouser. Digikey is another source. Both of these are readily used. Unless you live near a large city, your local sources are probably limited.

That looks and sounds great. I wasn't able to watch the video on the other PC I was using. Just watched it on mine and heard you mention Mouser.

Nice job!

I did mine(SX-790 black dial version of the 780) last year. Used Mouser, and Nichicon UPW SERIES caps for most all of it.

Sounds very much like yours. Damn that sounds good!

Good Job.

SX 780 Recap List

Pioneer SX-780 ReCap
Electrolytic Capacitor List

NOTE: These are just the ones I replaced.
You may choose to replace others in the RF or Power Supply sections.
NOTE: All caps are Nichicon rated at -55 to +105̊ C, 2000 hours or better.
The UFW series are specifically rated for Audio Equipment and are printed in gold and black
making them look nice, however they are not necessarily as low in ESR and they are rated
at -40 to + 80 C not up to 105C like the others...
NOTE: Some voltage values are increased due to the unavailability of the lesser value.
For example a 4.7 uF 35v cap was replaced with a 50v and several 50v caps were replaced with 63 volt ones.
It's OK to go up one to the next higher value but do not go down, nor jump from a 6.3 volt to a 50 volt.

That was a great video:yes:, can really hear a difference. Before I re-capped my sx-727, it sounded good, but I didn't think re-capping would help at all, as I figured it still worked. WEll, I went ahead with it, because I was already in there cleaning the controls. Totally worth it, the improvement in sound was fantastic, i'm really loving that receiver now. The sx-780 is a nice unit, especially that one, it's very clean. Have never seen the inside of one before, nice looking amp. Sounds good...only problem now is that I want the magnificent seven soundtrack:scratch2:...

I'm looking forward to listening to my Marantz 2250 when I finish. I elected to re-cap just the power amps and power supply as a) I have a much better tuner than the one in the Marantz and b) the on in the Marantz works. I also rarely use the tone controls. I just finished up last night but aaaaggghhhhh!!! I ordered one wrong cap. Due to the fact that Marantz schematics are often incorrect, I visually checked each cap, but unfortunately missed a decimal place and ordered a 47uF 50V instead of a 4.7uF 50V. So now it's done, new LED lamps are installed, but I can't use it until I grab this one more cap. Might be a month before I place another order as I hate paying $15 shipping for a $0.20 part...

Nice sound and great looking too.

What kind of speakers did you build? It looks like a full range driver plus a tweeter.

Speaker Design

Thanks I really appreciate that.
The speaker design came from a former Honeywell Engineer who helped design the joint strike fighter and other non mentionable aircraft systems who also happens to be an Audiophile. After listening to ipods and todays digital music I thought I was losing my hearing. I was at his home and he played an album through some older speakers he designed and there, in the music coming from his speakers were all the sounds I remembered. He then showed me his design and mentioned that he wanted to update it and make something even better. Since the economy went Tango Uniform he has had some extra time and helped me to design these. I told him I was on a budget and couldn't afford to spend alot of money. We found the speakers on sale and spent the money on the cross-over instead. The cabinets are Daytons from Parts Express. The design will work with speaker cabinets from .75 cubic feet (my speakers) to 1.25 cubic feet, by adjusting the length of the vent tubes. I have uploaded the design. Since I can't upload the power point I have converted each slide into a .jpg file.

Better Cross-Over Design

The previous post showed the recommended cross-over, but after building and testing we revised it to this better design. The components purchased were the closest to the actual calculated values commercially available, so if the equation called for a 24.2 mH coil I purchased a 25mH coil and just unwound it several turns.
I am very pleased with the sound and after running them now for a week they have really opened up with a much clearer and warmer sound than when we first fired them up. I was told new speakers need to "work-in" but had never experienced it, each day they sounded a little better than the day before.
I hope if you build that you are as satisfied as I am. It's amazing how these relatively small speakers can completely fill a 14' x 22' room with incredible sound. Thanks again to my engineer friend Jerry Parise who has copyright.
