Soundcraftsmen amp joins the fold!

Jailtime

Standin' on a corner
I finally got the Soundcraftsmen MA 5002 that I've been searching for. This is a project amp for sure, the right VU meter glass is cracked. It's also stuck in protect mode I'm told, I haven't powered it up yet. Looks like everything is fairly accessible. This thing is a beast, there's two sets of filter caps, each set has its own rectifier. Must be the Vari-portional system. I can't figure out how the faceplate is fastened to the chassis, any tips on that? Any other info or tips on this amp (and the above issues) are most welcome.

Thanks to AKer Danimal for finding this amp and picking it up for me. I couldn't have asked for a better transaction. Without his efforts, I wouldn't have my much sought after amp right now. :thmbsp:

Danimal found it on his local CL for me. And nope, it won't take time away from the 2220B. :D

I'm glad it arrived in one piece. It was the first time I ever pack and shipped something like that. I hope you get her up and running soon.

To disassemble this amp you need a 1/4 inch nut driver.
Remove the top panels
Remove the side panels
The back panel will fold down allowing you to work on the amp
The front panel is held on by the rack handles it is a large allen headed bolt
that screws in from the back thru the front face plate.
Search for threads by me and you will find alot of information on this amp.
I have recapped and fixed a few of them.

This is not an easy amp to work on.

I'd love to own one of those. I bet it will sound great with your Dahlquists.

Treat the wirewraps with care .. They tend to get rather brittle..:thmbsp:

Yep, I killed a wirewrap in a Marantz 2220B, right in the preamp section. Didn't notice when it happened, and spent hours trying to track down problems in the preamp. Found the broken wrap while I was checking cap polarity for the millionth time. :sigh:

The smashed VU meter glass is going to be tough to repair. The whole meter is in a clear one piece case. Maybe cut the front off very carefully and replace it with a piece of equal thickness?

That is a sweet looking rock. I cant imagine how it will sound once it is refurbished and working as if it were new. Very nice.
