Pioneer PL-41 cable

Part warning, part inquiry.....

I ordered this knowing I was taking a risk (it was an epray buy, not from this site at full price). It dosen't fit. That's the warning part. Any PL-41 owners looking at this piece be aware. It will not just slide on in place of the stock cable.

Now the inquiry part.

Initially, the actual pin holes on the cable end looked too small, and they were. I was able to spread them via the relief slits, and after fitting each hole on each pin, was able to determine that they would indeed slide on. However, it seems that the spread of the pins is just a bit off as I can't get the entire DIN connector on the pins.

This is a nice cable and I want to make it work. Right now the only way I can see this happening is reaming out the DIN holes on the connector. I have no idea what effect this will have on the performance of the cable. I don't even know it it'll work.

If that fails I could certainly clip the RCA's off the Canare (they're nice and beefy) and put them on the stock cable. But again, I don't know if that will be an overall improvement. It would certainly be an improvement fit-wise over the current mismatched connectors and iffy soldering.

Or I could just try to send the thing back (to Israel).

What'dya think?

Allright, so after dicking with the tonearm for a bit another option comes to light. Re-wiring the tonearm :stupid:

I'm assuming I could find a modern DIN connector that would fit this cable. Any recommendations? Any rec's on tonearm cable for a PL-41? That would be the only way this option would work.

I had my Tonearm rewired with Cardas pure copper low oxygen 33awg wires
along with custom made Petras RCA cables with gold plated Niko RCA plugs. It made a great improvement over stock. I would modify that cable you have in order to make it fit. Pretty nice looking cable.

I wrote something about this a while back on my PL-41, the standard "DIN" plugs will not fit mine, it has larger pins and a bit different diameter....

If I were to go to the work, I'd rewire the arm with Cardas 33 gauge tonearm wire and get a Cardas male DIN to stick in the base of the tonearm...

Putting a good tonearm lead on the arm without replacing the aged and cheap internal wire seems like a waste of a good lead....

That is an even better idea!

I don't know, if not you might have to make some kind of spacer to fit...but the DIN should be small enough to fit in the arm base, how small, though, is the question....

Why not mount a couple of RCA jacks to the back of the plinth, like on a little piece of plastic mounted to the hole that the cord normally comes out of? Then rewire the tonearm and solder the wires directly to the RCA jacks.

Brilliant!

But too late. My parts are on the way from partsconnexion.

Andy, that is the stuff I rewired my well tempered arm with. Nice stuff!

Your dedication to this hobby is making me look bad :P

I think you will be pleased by the result. Match the arm up with a nice low compliance cart and it should sing.

On another note, as nice as my PL-41 sounds with the tonearm re-wiring and better RCA's, I sometimes wonder how it would sound with a completely different tonearm. I read somewhere that a Rega arm will fit the hole that is currently occupied by the stock arm. Anyone know of anybody that ever performed a tonearm replacement mod on the PL-41?

Are you saying that the Rega will fit in the PL-41s VTA collar?

That I don't know. I seriously doubt it. What I read (can't remember where) is that the pivot point to end of tonearm was the same. But, I don't always believe everything I read and was hoping that someone that knows more about this will chime in.

The PL-41 has a lot to love. First, it has a 4-pole hysteresis synchronous motor. Rock solid, always on time. I also like the heavy aluminum one piece platter over the two piece designs you see in other TT's. Strong, metal parts. I like the heavy wood plinth. It is also a good looking TT IMHO. I also like their simplicity, much like my Thorens or AR's I have seen. I think that the key to improvement is a nice modern arm but I don't have the technical expertise necessary to figure out which one or how. I am strictly a bolt on bitch. :D

We really need to start a PL-41 users thread.

Retardation is more like it.

This was totally an accident. After giving up on forcing the Canare to fit I just started pulling the rest of the tonearm apart out of curiosity. When I was done I looked at the pile of parts and said, f%#$ it, I'll just re-wire the damn thing.

I rewired mine. Daunting at first but surprisingly simple in practice. The key is to make a hook tool to grab the wires from the shaft through the pivot. Leave enough wire to make small loops on the end and pull them through.
