Pioneer PL-41 tonearm re-wire

So my parts came in today and in looking over the tonearm a couple questions come ot mind. First, is there a particular secret for getting the existing male DIN out of the tonearm base, or do I just pry it out? It dosen't appear that it's going to come out easy and I wanted to check if there's an obvious solution before I go banging on it (I'm very good at tearing **** apart - particularly so it's never usable again). :bash:

Second, I removed the two tiny set screws that are on the underside of the arm next to the headshell collar. I'm assuming that piece will pull out given enough force, but want to make sure. Same as above.

Here's the parts

Cardas DIN, jacketed wire and leads along with that damn Canare cable from the bay that started this whole thing.

The arm's headshell collet should pull out with those screws removed- use a headshell to gain leverage and don't be too forceful.

As for the tone arm DIN, I think it must be press-fit. I am only assuming this. Try chilling the arm in the fridge, then applying heat carefully.

If I recall correctly the Din connector screws in. The collar for the headshell mount comes out with considerable force. I had to use a pair of pliers around something soft. You have to wiggle it out slowly.

The most difficult aspect of this job is getting the wires from the arm tube through the pivot.

Make a thin hook out of hanger wire. Make sure you use plenty of tonearm wire so there is enough slack to make little loops on the end. Use the little loops and the mini hook to pull the wire through the pivot.

With the arm tube apart, this is a good opportunity to dampen the arm tube to deaden resonance. I used a large tube of shrink wrap around the arm. Hard to tell how much it helps, but according my limited understanding it should help, and it looks good. Kind of tweaky.

I am very curious as to how you are going to get a good fit with the new DIN connector. I really hope it goes well for you because I would like to do something similar to mine.

Good luck!

Bingo! It screwed right out. I don't know why I didn't try that. Thanks.

I'm curious about that myself. Maybe there's a way to cut out the correct diameter of the old DIN, thereby using the threads again.

An option here is forget the DIN and just wire the tone arm wires to RCA plugs.

Think of a 1 1/2" by 3/8" strip of hard plastic, say a section of a plastic ruler or a slice cut from a Bondo spreader. Make it a size to fit through the tone arm mounting hole.

Or make it so they gently dangle from the arm, make a rear mount adaptor plate, and once inserted through the mounting hole, screw the RCAs into the mounting plate on the back.

Does this make sense?
