Fisher Console - Custom Build or Standard Offering

I recently picked up a Fisher tube stereo console with separate stand-alone speakers. It is absolutely beautiful!

I have been unable to find a similar looking model on AK, or elsewhere...believe me, I've looked through the entire thread here on Fisher consoles and surfed the 'net tirelessly. Both the cabinet and the speaker enclosures are made of solid Teak wood and follow a Danish Modern design.

I am looking for a timeframe when this console might have been constructed...based on the components. I am also looking for opinions on the possibility/probability that this is a custom build.

The unit has Fisher FM-200-B, Fisher X-101-B, and Thorens TD124 components. I cannot figure out how to remove the speaker grill covers to find out the speaker information, but each speaker cabinet is 21" x 19 1/2" x 32".

Pictures added...

TIA & BR,

Terry

Did ANYBODY ever put a Thorens 124 in a factory console, even TOTL?
One trick I like to use is google image search.
Your eyes can decide very quickly if anyone's ever posted a picture of a comparable console... of course there must be some contextual text for the google indexing engine to key on, but overall I find it to be a good, fast trick to finding websites with related information.

There was a console unit for sale in the bay area about a month ago with a 124 in it. Thread on dollars and sense IIRC. Custom job I assume.

surely not a standard offering from fisher. maybe barzalay cabinet, not that its bad thing by any stretch. actually that looks like quite a nice unit especially with the td-124..

btw, is that your collection ? very nice !!!

If they are Barzilay, that would be nice...I am very happy with their appearance.

Yes, that is part of my collection in my den. I have temporarily placed this Fisher console in there until I can relocate it to its permanent location within my house.

Thanks,

Terry

Definately a custom job. I don't recall any of FISHER's offerings having separate speakers in a Factory setup. Except the EARLY Mono's with a separate speaker to make it stereo.

FISHER used Elac Miracord, Garrard, DUAL, and in later SS consoles, BSR (Seriously!). The Amp and tuner Sections were normally oriented horizontally across the top of the front face or inside, not vertically as yours is.

Definately a HEAD TURNER! I'd say 1963-1967.

i really like your radio room and love those old am radios. some day i will get there.

as far as the cabinetry is concerned, no matter who manufactured it shes a really nice unit. maybe you could snap a few pics on the speaker enclosers front and back, then post in speaker forum. i have come to conclusion that most likely someone on ak will know what it is or may have one. just a matter of getting it in front of the right person

Good looking setup there! The Thorens has an Empire arm on it, I've never seen that combination before.

Very nice fine, total custom job. I would imagine there is some mighty fine speakers in the cabinets, and make sure to do a proper recap before to much regular playing. I think I like the looks but I think the legs need a little more style, like the spun jbl legs :D

My guess is that it is a custom unit. Can you find any tags on it? The rear should provide a lot of clues. The Fisher units that I have seen have cheap peg board type rear covers.

I like your collection. I am intrigued about the KDKA neon sign. The first commercial radio station in the country. It's still broadcasting radio and TV here in Pittsburgh.

And a very, very well-done custom unit. Whoever was the first owner of that thing was doing pretty well financially. What a nice addition to your collection, congrats.

Additional Information:

. I bought this console off of the original owner's family...it was a "one owner"
. It was in dry storage for over 30 years
. The KDKA neon is real...I grew up outside of Pittsburgh & came to VA via CA
. I've restored radios, etc for many years...the Fisher units will be recapped

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments on both the console and my visible collection. The Fisher was briefly tested as working and will be recapped before extensive play; otherwise everything you see in the picture has been recapped/restored/left as original as possible and works.

Terry

At the risk of getting this dumped into D&S (and at the risk of crying in disbelief at the superb deal you got) approximately how much did you pay for this beauty?

$500

When I picked it up, I was also given for free a Technics set up (SU-8099, ST-8077 & RS-M44) by the seller.

radioterry,
There ya go trying and succeeding in making us jealous! :boink:
Actually, thanks for sharing.

Anyone restoring pieces to the level it appears you do deserves a chestnut like that one.
I've gutted a few consoles, but I have to say that if that one ever passed my threshold, it would stay intact.

I was able to figure out how the speaker covers come off. There are screws underneath the bottom of the cabinet and pegs w/companion holes on the top.

The Speakers are huge (15”?), and VERY heavy Bozaks. I didn't remove them from the mounting board; I just looked at the backside. So, I don't know if there are any smaller speakers mounted across the front of the actual large speaker.

I will have to search more for specifics, but it looks like there is B 109 A and 8 ohms stenciled on the speaker frame. The crossover is in a metal box attached to the back of the speaker frame…I am guessing the caps are inside of it.

I will look again tomorrow, when I’ll have more time, and write down all of the marking and alphanumerics.

Terry

I have cleared out my workbench and I am now ready to start the restorations. To begin, I need the schematics and the manuals for the Fisher FM-200-B and X-101-B. To date, I have not been able to find them on the Internet. Does anyone have copies or know where there are any copies uploaded/stored?

I would like to be able to verify all of the component values and their physical connections. Once I have recapped/restored both units, I would like to confirm all physical hook ups - speakers, TT and tuner.

TIA & BR,

Terry

Hello,
The amplifier info is available through the Yahoo Fisher Owners Group's database. Unfortunately this forum will not allow me to download here due to file size for pdf document. They also appear to have a folder for the tuner but there is a problem there. May be a good idea to join that group
