Mesmarising!...............................
All the words echoed over the years across stereo shops, review guides,smoke-out spots, house parties, living & family rooms and other places where audiophiles, stereo geeks, and anyone else who loves music and utter sonic bliss hang out!! Saul B. Marantz knew how to build one HELL of a good stereo!!!!!!!.
i have loved anything and anything marantz since the day i scored a 2220b sitting on a blacktop driveway garage sale for $2.00 on a sizzling hot central florida summer saturday morning in 1997! at that time i was 13 years old and had a pretty big collection even at that time, this was my first experiance with the big M!!! and its all been downhill since then! the 2220b was soon replaced by a 2230, than a 2270, all the way up to the quad 4400 series with the scope! -i forget the exact model but i think it was 4445? i dont remember.
anyway in my younger years i really went batshit over marantz, i remember during my 2000 garage stereo cencus i counted over 40 marantz receivers in the Great wall of hi-fi (witch ill tell you about later.). over the years i sold them off, burned them up, got stolen. etc but i still have about 15 of them and i still scoop them up every now and then.
HI_FI ROOTS!!! TO SAVE MY GEAR!!! MARANTZ MOUNTIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
last night, time 11:30 pm, my buddy Billy, another vintage stereo lover and my hi-fi wingman, came over to assist the garage stereo restoration recovery.
we decided it was time to crack into the 4 dusty dirty marantz receivers in the heap. he started with the 2230 and and i started with the uglyest one in the pyle, a 2220b that was hidious! by 12 we were set up and ready for the marathon! i placed emerson lake and palmer on a tube magnavox turntable i use in the workshop., and dug in!!!
----------------------------number 1-------------------------------------
the 2230 was fairly easy and light to refresh, sprayed the controls, replaced 3 dial lights, dusting, lemony fresh the cabinets, etc. it came out really nice and i let billy take it home to play with for a few months wile his 2235b is sitting in the shop.
-----------------------------number 2------------------------------------
HALFWAY UP MARANTZ MOUNTAIN !!!!!!
the 2220b was a different story. this was not my original marantz. i found this one on the side of the road one day wile skipping school and smoking grass with my old buddies about 12 years ago, with a pair of matching imperial speakers and a teac reel to reel all dirty and dusty with a cardboard sign with FREE taped to it. great trash score huh? no not really the reel to reel started smoking when i plugged it in and went straight back in the trash after stripping it of parts, and the speakers were water damaged and were blown. this receiver had a blonde wood cabinet when i found it and it was pretty beat and i thought it was ugly so i pulled the wood case off and tossed it.:sigh: wish i knew then how rare blonde wood marantz cases are now. anyway i never did anything with this 2220b cause i was tired of finding random 2220b's just about everyware!! ---this was and still is the most common as dirt marantz receiver ever for me, i swear ive probubly had 20 2220b's over the years and i still know of about 20 others still in use across the state of fllorida in bars, resturants, and stores, coverd in dust with burned out dial lights playing smooth jazz muzak backround noise here and there.--- anyway this one needed just about everything, full face-off refresh, polish, dial lights all the way around, spray, lube controls, it needed 2 feet and 1 front panel hex screw, replacing the tuning stick light was stressful and hair-razing but it HAD to be done! also this one had someones boot shoe print on the bottom of it?? my blood sweat and tears went into this one and it was well worth the work! it came out absolutly splended!!
-------------------------------------number 3-----------------------------
by 3 am i was starting to appretiate and see the sheer magnatude of the project that sat before me!! still 40 something other receivers and i hadnt even scratched the surface of the heap! thank god for my stereo buddy billy he has been a lifesaver!! MAJOR KUDOS to him!! now it was time for a 2225 that i found in a dumpster behind an apartment building on some trash run many moons ago, this one got all the usual cleanings, billy replaced 3 dial lights and a bass knob. this one came out nice shiny and LOUD!!
-------------finishing un-finished business------number 4------------------
its now 4:30am im sweaty, my hands are cramped from using screwdrivers, my back is soar from leaning forward for allmost 6 hours, im delerious from the work! i have cuts on my fingers from slicing them against receiver chassis, my hands are tingling from the 3 big electrical shocks from another receiver i did earlyer....
the grand fanally! another hidious 2220b.....SCALING MARANTZ MOUNTAIN
i dont remember where this one came from but it was in my garage close to my old workbench. covered in dust like everything else in there.
i had started a restoration on this one 10 years ago and never finished it. what a shame!!! anyway it had no screws in the case, no feet, and no dial scale in it!
about 6 months ago i found a , yes another one- 2220b in the trash that was too ugly to restore ,THANK GOD i saved the dial scale from it !! it fit perfectly and this receiver came out like new! it took me a decade to finish this one lmfao!!!!
--------------i have reached the summit of marantz mountain!!!!------------
whew! what a night!
ive never knew anyone who hates old marantz stuff, its some of the best stuff out there! everything from the early model 18 to the superscope 70s "22" series , to the early 80s "sr" series by phillips when the big m gasped for its last analoge breath!!!
so there it is my marantz story and climbing the mountain, i hope you enjoyed it and i hope you dont give me too much crap for my bad spelling! :thmbsp::yes:
