6V6GTA with blue light?

I'm rolling some tubes in my ASR-110 amp today, & remembered these from an old PP mono maggie. They're GE coin-based black plate 6V6GTA, & I didn't have really high hopes, but they sound great, at least as good as the GE 7408s. And even better, check out the faint blue glow, around the middle. I never heard of 6V6s doing that. :scratch2: Oh yeah, they BOTH test right between 79-80 on the tester, so perfect for SE. :smoke:

That's good to know, I was definitely thinking about finding some coke-bottles eventually. As long as they sound good, that's the main thing, but the blue is definitely a bonus.

Maybe the were K-mart blue light specials

LOL. :D It finally got dark out, so I was able to get a better pic. The blue shows much better from the side, so it's a little askew. ;) BTW, the lights seem to move around, when looking through the camera, one of these days I'll have to try a short movie, to see if that shows up.

Usually thats fine, it may indicate you have the plate voltage on the high end of the "normal" scale, but it doesn't indicate any problem with the tube. When they glow pink or the plates turn red, then you have problems.

Most of the G's Ive seen are shaded in some way so I havent seen them blue but It seems all the coin bases do in my experience.
If it has to do with high plate voltage then All the G's should cause they are rated for lower plate voltage than a GT.

I think the box plate versions do it more than the standard style.

..

it doesn't so much indicate plate voltage ratings, but I've found that the glow is definitely brighter with higher B+. Cut it down to 250 or so, and its a whole lot less pronounced than at 300 or 350.

I couldn't easily find the thread I was looking for, but this one'll do, since I started it. ;) I finally got everything done on the ASR-110, except for building a decent base, but I now own a miter box & saw, LOL, so that'll happen eventually. :D I ended up cleaning up the chassis pretty good with Brasso, upgraded the speaker binding posts to gold-plated with nice fat holes, put in a toggle switch, & put the badge over the old speaker plug hole (that's just silicone around it, it'll clean right off). Made a HUGE difference. Oh yeah, I put rubber grommets on the holes, for where the speaker leads come through from the OTs. I'm using my newly aquired RCA gray plate 6V6GTAs, with the double D bottom getters, and they don't glow blue, but they sound GREAT. :thmbsp: The only issue is, I need to put tube shields on the Heathkit AA-11, something is really magnifying the sound through the tubes, from any sound around it. :D Those pushbuttons look a little funky, cause I need to glue them on. Some are kinda loose, which is why one's not pictured. It fell off in my closet, which will take some time to unbury it from my junk. ;)

Coincidence?

I just tube rolled a pair of Magnavox branded, RCA gray plate 6V6GTA tubes into my SE amplifier this afternoon.

A very nice tube for sure!!

Steve

Cool. :thmbsp: I like them quite a bit, there's a good strong bass, but it's not overwhelming or flabby, and you can actually get too much treble, if you turn it up. I probably like more treble than most people do, but I want my bass too, & it's not easy getting both sometimes. :smoke:

Looks like you got the SE version of the ASR-120. Find a pair of push/pull output transformers, two more 6V6's, and you got an ASR-120.

I got that one first, it's down in the basement. :D I prefer SE, myself, not only for the sound, but it makes less heat in my little listening area.

Right on! :thmbsp:

My ASR-120 is no longer an ASR-120. I put a Bogen power transformer on it, removed the 6CA4 and drilled an octal socket for a 5U4, added two Scott LK-48 output transformers, and four 6L6GC's. The only things left that are original are the two 7199 tubes. :D

You should replace those 7199s too, nobody likes those. :D

YUP, you're right! I only got 2 more 7199's in my stash. I actually like 'em but I was actually thinking of re-wiring it for 6GH8's. Got a ton of those. Maybe even 6AN8's as I have about 12 of those.
