Score... or, fell off the wagon again... MK sat-1

Well I just had to grab them. I've had the matching sub (s) for years. Don't come up much. Made in the USA (late 70's?) M&K sat-1 speakers. Time aligned I might add. They are bricks, thick cabs, lots of wood. For small speaker they are heavy. I have a passive Goliath M&K sub or powered Volkswoofer MK sub, both peirod correct and very similar look. Will try both and pick. Some cab damage but not bad, will clean up nice. :thmbsp:

I have the original drivers but the owner said they sounded floppy and loose. Surrounds look good but suspension does feel loose. Anyway i have them. Anyone know who actually makes the MK badged speakers?

Replacement are Vifa (or peerless maybe?)... heck, you guess. Coated aluminum. Sound pretty good and surprisingly powerful for small speakers.

Has a mutli speaker hooks up that changes the sound and it actually works amazingly well. NICE. It is access to an internal XO with varied settings. Has the diagram on the rear of the speakers. Six settings, German, British, American and high / low tweet for each. Fun. Off my little pioneer and i preferred the German / Low setting but did not try the American / hi which the seller preferred as i needed a jumper and had no time. Will be fun to play with.

So heard them at the sellers house and sounded good. Sounds good here to. Have not run them with a sub so can't really form an opinion yet. Once they are released from low end duties and there IS low end I think it will be quite good. Like the tweets already, mids are nice too and the whole thing is "punchy" sounding. Should be fun.

BTW why would you stack tweets?

cool. Ive got those speakers as well. And i always wondered what the little woofs looked like in the nude...Thanks.
.
Can you believe it that they can handle 400 watts max?! They like current behind them.

Mine didnt come with the connection diagram in the back. I think mine are s1b sats Pretty good sound with the matching sub.
I also have two volkswooofer subs.

Curiosity got the best of me. He told me they were Peerless, he lied, thats lame. I would have bought them regardless as I have the originals anyway. Why do that? Anyway you will never guess the brand. And they are ether coated aluminum or poly that looks aluminum. Sounded fine. Will try the originals and see what I like best.

Anyone want to guess the brand of the replacements?

I might say the originals were SEAS drivers. They made a ton of 5 1/4 inch drivers (I think that's the dimension of these units), some with an injection moulded frame and they used a lot of rubber type surrounds.

As for the replacements, maybe some autosound types like JL audio or somesuch? Doesn't sound like they were TOTL drivers from your description?

Never noticed before but the top tweeter box looks like a mini-JBL L300 with the grill on the wrong side :D right down to the curved top corners.

A friend of mine locally had a set of those that he used with an ordinary HT sub, and it was pretty decent little setup. When crossed-over properly, they will rock.
Those tweeters look like Peerless to me. I'd venture a guess that the mid-bass drivers are SEAS or Scanspeak.

Have had two sets of the 4-element 'wedge on top' sats, the orig with the square corners and my Sat-1b set that look just like yours but with two knobs in back.

Yes that 400 wpc is no joke, that's why the double soft dome tweeters, one couldn't possibly have the extension to keep up with the sub.

This is Acoustic Suspension taken to the extreme. Very small sealed thick-walled cabs, superb crossover, and big sound.

:thmbsp:

Placement is everything, tweeters to ear level. Try not to bookshelf them, and they will image.

S1-C is a weird bird, push-pull like some of their twin-12 subs? Never seen that one.

Second on the tweeters being Peerless....same as in my Polk Monitor 7's and 10's (same vintage). Outstanding tweeters. Perhaps that's what the seller meant as being Peerless.

I had a pair lined up from a guy for $100..one had a lil' crackle when played....When I went to buy them... he said he found the problem, a bad wire in the crossover. Guess what...He didn't want to sell them!!! The drivers look like Klispch or Mirage drivers!

OK, no one is going to guess the replacement brand so I'll just give it up. Did not even know they made speakers. Weird. Sound pretty good. Owner said the specs and Q was right and he had many home build designs at his our including some nice MTM designs so he did know something. Interesting.

I moved stuff around in preparation for a X-mas tree and way downsized everything to make room. I was running my newly acquired JBL's which on second go round I quite like. Good speakers, not great. Amazing bass output for a smaller speaker. Anyway I quickly swapped in the MK Sats to hear them and noticed MUCH better highs and better mids from the MK Sats over the JBL's but the JBL's killed them on bass. Understandable given that the MK mid cab is probably 1/4 or less the volume of the JBL. This is going to sound funny but the MK's sound like a big hi tech Minimum 7 :smoke: Tight and punchy with great top end and not much bottom.

For referance here is the JBL's they easily outdo on the top and mid.
