What's your iPod set up?

There are a few new DAC-related devices that allow us to get superior sound quality out of our iPods. I'm having a hard time sorting through all of the info out there, partly because there are few reviews. Here's what I'm currently leaning toward:

1. Pure i-20 dock: $99. Docking station with a built in DAC, though not the highest quality (Cirrus Logic) chip. BUT, it has digital-out so a higher end DAC could be linked up down the road, turning this into a transport dock (and still only half the price of Onkyo's offering and far cheaper than the Wadia Transport). That said, I have heard rumors of positive reviews by HiFi Choice and What HiFi, though i haven't been able to locate them online. If I went this route, I'd likely eventually add the Musical Fidelity V-DAC down the road, which gets stellar reviews across the board by audiophiles. Total investment: $350.

2. HRT iStreamer: $199. Looks like a pretty good transport/DAC (Burr Brown) but reviews are sparse. Their other DACs get very good reviews, though. Only problem is that the DAC cannot be bypassed (device cannot be used as a transport) if one wants a better DAC down the road.

3. Teac CD-P 650 CD player: $170 online. You get a decent CDP/transport/DAC (Burr Brown) all in one. Has a digital out so the internal DAC can be bypassed. Only downside is that the CDP power likely has to be on for the iPod to play (I'm just guessing here). On the plus side, if an external DAC is added later on, both devices could take advantage of it, since the iPod runs through the CDP.

Of course, there are other options too, like the Wadia or the Onkyo transport dock (NS-01?), but these are somewhat spendy by themselves and require an external DAC to work, so your total investment gets pretty high pretty quickly. It also looks like Peachtree has some ~$1k docking devices, but those are way out of my price range (that is, if I want to avoid a divorce :D ).

So for all of those running an iPod or MP3 player through your system, what's your set-up? What do you see as the best option going down the road?

If you have a PC running iTunes and wireless router, the cheapest way to get music to your stereo is an AppleTV for ~$99. The new AppleTVs are music streaming devices only (they no longer have internal hard drives). ATVs output analog via RCA plugs and Toslink digital. The Toslink output can then be run to a better DAC for higher quality sound.

Interesting about the TV for a wireless option. I assume the PC needs to be on whenever you want to play music, though?

I didn't know that Pure i-20 before this post (thanks!), looks like a great solution, go for it when it becomes available in the USA. Never seen this much functionality for the price and it looks great too!

Its already FS in the UK.

BmWr75, how does the AppleTV also accept music form an Ipod/Iphone?

Actually, it appears that you can order it on Pure.com right now, making it all the more attractive :)

I have an iPad and the camera kit and it allows a digital signal to be sent to a USB DAC. This was nice for playing directly fom the iPad with my USB DACs. I also have a couple Airport Express units that would stream music from my computer running iTunes and I could use the iPad or iPhone to control the computer with the Apple Remote software. Works great, but I also have a program called airfoil that will stream audio that comes from a source other than iTunes, too.

Now, with the newest iOs update, I can stream right from the iPad to the Airport Express units in the house. The great thing about that is that I don't need to connect the camera kit/USB unless I am away from the house. With multitasking, I can surf the web on my iPad while it streams wirelessly to my DACs.

My Denon 4311ci had a $49 update that works with Airplay, too. I just turn on my iPad ( also works with iphone and the touch with the latest firmware) choose a song from Rhapsody or Pandora ( or any audio source from what I can tell..YouTube, Netflix, etc) and tell it to stream to my receiver and it turns on the receiver and begins playing...it will even control the volume. :music:

Needless to say, I am happy with my many Apple based setups.

Correct. My PC runs 24/7 unless I am out of town for 2 or more days.

I am running a 1st gen iphone that no longer has cell service into an Onkyo ND-S1 ipod transport / dock. Then via digital coax to a Sony SDP-EP9ES dolby digital processer, running as a 2 channel DAC. Sounds very nice and works well, except the phone resets itself every couple of hours for no apparent reason.

The Airport Express is cheaper and delivers bit perfect from 16/44.1khz. The new Apple TV, from what I have read, only sends out 48khz. I still plan on adding one for the audio and video, but I hope they add the ability to just send out the native signal from the audio file.

I have an iPod dock, hooked up by RCA to the amp. Nothing special, sounds OK. Might try the external DAC someday, but the iPod is mostly used for mobile music here.

I would rather use something other than an iPod for a music server in a system but if you must use an iPod the new Peachtree products are very nice. Especially if you are starting from scratch. The iNova is a lot of audio for the $

Digital connection, great DAC, great pre, great HP amp, and great amp all in one box...

Ipod or computer (optical or USB out) ----> DAC ---->Kenwood intergrated amp------>speakers. If u stream to the airport express wirelessly or if you use Itunes, then the digital signal is limited to 16bit (44 cd, 48 dvd). Optical out on the macbook pro will do 24bit 96 . There are media players out there that can do 24bit 96 to the dac, but those require an ethernet (wired network connection). U can still control the media player by using the ipod touch/iphone as a remote.

With the new ios4.2 U can stream Pandora radio, web-base apps, Music, movies etc.....to the airport express wirelesly. or U can stream music from a computer or NAS drive to your ipod or Iphone. So Your Ipod touch (8gb), when connected to your network is essentially 200gb ---- enless. Still only 16 bit, 44khz.

I have a question. I am using an airport express to access itunes wirelessly to my Denon 3805 via the remote app on the Touch. All CD's were imported using apple lossless and are connected via toslink from the airport express to the receiver. I can tell no difference in sound quality from my CD's except that volume is noticeably lower for a given volume setting on the Denon. I can turn the volume up and it gets louder but I can never reach the type of volume I can straight from a CD player. I don't think I have any kind of volume limiter or eq turned on in itunes unless it is hidden really deep in an obscure menu. Any ideas or has anyone else experienced something similar?

Thanks

I'm using the apple universal dock with the little remote dealy hooked into my stereo through audio line in and it sounds pretty good to me. As good as my Teac cd player anyway.

Agreed with both points. Use something (anything!) besides an iPod for a server and I've heard nothing but good things about Peachtree products. Pricey though.

ZUNE!

30g, docked with remote to my integrated.

I lost the remote in my recliner for a week and I thought I was going to lose my mind. I actually resorted to vinyl for a bit.

My setup is similar. I use old apple tv to digital coaxial to yamaha rx-v2700. When volume is low, I check the volume on my itouch. When using the remote app, you can turn the volume up or down - a cool feature unless you forget to check it, which has happened to me. Try that.
