It would be a local purchase.

Velodyne DLS 5000r. Would like to get the missing(not so much)lower(est) octoves available in movies. Ive already got the other aspects of the sound covered to a varying degree. But want that really low bass content!

I hear you brother. I've got the same problem. The Hurt Locker cripples my sub. I'd like to hear stuff like that without being distracted by my dying sub.

Oh Oh, there are plenty of opinions on subs here, most prefer a bass distribution system instead of a single sub. I dare you to ask what that is, lol.

I use a relatively cheap BIC 12" sub for my HT and it sounds fine, but I don't watch movies at maximum volume either. I use a Velodyne 10" with my 2 channel rig.

theebadone, i know what bass distribution is. My problem isnt a lack of bass. One my front end i have what can be considered bass heavy speakers. One pair has 15 inch woofers(vegas) the other has dual 10 inchers(klipsch) and i already had a 12 inch sub(i put the velodyne where that one was and ill probably put the vega on top of the velodyne for a bit of shock and awe). But i just may experiment around just for fun. But wont be for a while. If you took a look in my sig lines youd get an idea of what im using.

89grand, Over time ill experiment with 2 channel with the new sub. All i can say right now is OMG!!! even at volumes of less than one watt. Sounds like a whole new dimension is opened up.

Ive already had the dynamics most any movie can muster up. Except for posibly the last 2 or three octaves. Im sure i had it flat to about 28 -30 hurtz with what i have been running. BUT still...not quite as low as i would have liked...hence the purchase. YAY im happy.for now...just kidding.

pics to come tomarrow for you pic junkies out there.

jon, the hurt locker is some thing you just intrigued me on...next few on my do watch list. In the mean time im going to be going thru the movies we have.

The consensus is, no matter what speakers you are using, they can (all) benefit by using a bass distribution system.

This is directed at audio newbies, not experienced hobbyists, so everybody calm down :D: a properly built conventional sub (i.e. excluding those "mighty mouse" subs that will fit in a car's glove compartment) with a 10" or 12" woofer equipped with a couple hundred watt amplifier can easily go much lower than a pair of huge floorstanders with 15" woofers driven by an 80lb vintage receiver. It's the tuning of the woofer+enclosure combination that determines what one will hear, or feel in this case, not so much the size of those two things when a movie soundtrack is played.

I'm just mentioning this because I'll read posts that say a certain pair of speakers provides all the bass needed for movies, but the thing is, speakers designed for music playback almost never reach lower than @30Hz, no matter how physically large they are: 1) except for say organ music and some electronic genres, music simply doesn't go lower than that; 2) a speaker that goes that low will be more expensive than one that doesn't and 3) such a speaker will require a much more powerful receiver or power amp to enable such a speaker to generate those super-low notes. Those last two points directly involve the customer as far as money is concerned and few companies will want to scare off potential buyers with speakers that can produce sound that is not needed for 95% of music.

Hey i still resemble that newbie remark!

Teh main reason i got the sub is that my speakers were too down quite a few decibels at close to 20 hurtz. n Id love to get a electronic cross over that cuts it off at 28 hurtz instead of the 40 that is preset.

The new HP soundtrack has a sustained note at 22 Hz.:D

The most impressive sound I've ever heard in a theater, but only in in the XD theater.

Music, not sound effects.

Hey budget,

When I wrote "...a pair of huge floorstanders with 15" woofers driven by an 80lb vintage receiver..." I actually had just randomly pulled that from my own memory banks as an extreme example to help make my point, then after reading your post I realized that was nearly identical to what you were using, but please don't think I was making fun of you or your choice of gear.

And btw, as an example of a conventional speaker that can get very close (or actually make it there) to 20Hz is the Acoustic Research AR9. This brochure says the original is -3dB down at 28Hz, and since it's an acoustic-suspension system, I bet it does get to 20Hz or lower - and with the help of a really gutsy amp - but just not to the same volume level as a true subwoofer.

:thmbsp:

A point often not mentioned or understood...flatness of response at low power isn't the same thing as having prodigious output at that same frequency.

i didnt take offence to your post radshack, The vegas probably go down to 28 hurtz, just dont know the how much down they are in decibels.

I should have included a :D by the i resemble that remark. Because thats how i feel alot. And the vegas are ported.

The sub woofer is 600w RMS. while my HT receiver is 30 wpc in ht mode. Over kill i know but the lowest notes kinda need that power to be felt. And feel them i do at the listening position. Sub is right behind the couch. Nice touch of rumble...yeah baby! pics soon. If they are not too big...yes the sub is just big enough for me!

looks liek the photos went thru. was kinda worried that they may be too big. Im using a new camera so dont know the actual size they may be. :music:

a little too late to look into that sub juniorJBL. This is kind of a one time deal that can only happen once a year. No telling if ill get another one next year...:D

A little over kill?

Not so sure about that.

Stacked subs.

Vega ht s12a with 12 inch woofer. And the velodyne on the bottom.:D

have yet to listen with this configuration. trying to mess with youtube with out much success. BS connection on my end...keeps locking up. but will try with movies later.

first of many experiments.

this is so wierd. I finally found my ht remote and set my speakers to large. and didnt notice that the sub was turned off(when i changed to large).
I was just watching percy jackson and while it is fresh im going to try the scene in the beginning again with the sub on.
The foot steps could be felt with out teh sub on. Going to see what difference the sub makes with that scene
