Using a DJ mixer as a preamp.

I'm new and have a question. Other than looks, are there other cons to using a DJ mixer as a preamp? The mixer I plan to use is a 1985 Numark PPD DM-1900. If I remember correctly, Numark's PPD line is supposed to have better sound quality. Back it in the day, it just meant more expensive. Thanks.

The Numark should work fine, as used one on a temporary basis mixing tape's year's ago with two TT's. Keep in mind, commercial stuff is really more about ruggedness than than top quality sound. But if that's what you've got, give it a go for now.

I have used my Mackie D.2 DJ mixer in my system temporarily. It made my system too bass heavy, and the soundstage was constricted compared to the hifi preamps I have used. Overall, though, the sound was pretty decent, just not hifi.

It will be as good as it is ;). Mixers run from what, $75-$50,000? You can't really make any blanket statements about them. As far as the particular one you plan to use, I haven't got a clue.

If you like the sound, use it! If you don't like the sound, don't use it!

Pre in's and pre out's are the same whether it's for home or pro use.

I'd say yes to using that Numark, sounds pretty decent.
I love the flexibility of a dj mixer in terms of gain, numerous options for volume control, number of inputs and mixing (duh) when used as a pre.

And while many dj mixers aren't that great sounding, there are even mixers with excellent sound quality out there, like;
-Denon X-1700; will match a LOT of Hifi pre amps in terms of sound quality.
-The current generation of Pioneers
-Most A&H's (phono stages aren't that great on both pio and A&H though) are pretty good too.
-Vintage Bozak (and Urei) mixers very nice (but prohibitively expensive due to their reputation).
-ES rotary mixers (A la Bozak/Urei) are probably the best sounding dj mixer you can buy new; http://www.electronique-spectacle.com/
-Stanton VRM 10, but this unit is unfindable

Mixers that I used for a longer period and liked the sound sound quality of are;
Urei 1603, Gemini UMX series, (most) Ecler, (most) Rodec, (most) Dateq.

I use the Gemini UMX to date (messy setup, I know..);

I don't have anything against using mixers as preamps. I use a Samson MDR-1248 as the preamp for my Samson SX-1200, which is pushing the XLS-215's. I will say that it brings out a slight bit more detail and sound stage than what the Onkyo P-3200 does. Not much but it is a slightly noticeable difference. It also does not change the sound from the straight line signal, which is what I like the most because I also use the same mixer for recording.

I have had good luck using a mixer (Radio Shack SSM1000) for a preamp. Plus, you have the added input/outputs for more equipment, and the capability of the actual mixing itself, if you like that. Should work fine till you can upgrade to a good preamp.

^ Yes, it's good to know this works well for people. It will have to do for me. It will be awhile before I can get a preamp upgrade.

All the input I received so far is appreciated.

I use a Yamaha MG206c 20 channel mixer in my stereo system. In addition to providing many input/output options it allows me to adjust gain of each source so that I am not having to adjust the main level control as I switch between sources unless I want to turn up or turn down the volume. It gives me the ability to use a mic if necessary as I sometimes use the system for picnics at work. Also it allows me to EQ each channel separately should I need to. That way if I am EQd for a low quality source (home recorded reel to reel tape as an example) and I want to switch to my computer I don't have to re-eq anything. Gives me an adjustable recording output as well and I can also assign what I want to go to the record output.
