GW find: Braun L710/I Speakers

Dropped by the GW on the way home tonight, pretty dead. And just about when I was ready to leave out came a single Braun L710/1. Grabbed it immediately, and asked if they had another. The clerk went and had a look, and came back with its twin sister

Man were these dusty under the grill. After a quick brush down and vacuum I hooked them up to my garage receiver and these do sound fine. Once I clean them up they are going to spend a little time in the main system!

Got a question for you ADS / Braun owners. How do you clean the domes on the mid and tweeter? I know they are sorta sticky originally and that has created a bit of challenge in that the dust has really adhered to the domes.

Those grilles are crying out for a rolling pin or some such thing. If they are going in the mail system, maybe the body work can wait.

You didn't tell us you got some sweet 40 year old speaker wire with em. Heck of a deal there, doesn't matter who you are.

How is your German? http://wegavision.pytalhost.com/braun72/15.jpg

They are also in the 1969, 1973 and 1974 catalogs.

Thanks for the tips - will give these a try. I have, as I said, brushed them gently but I'll try the sticky tape followed by a damp cloth. Even with the dust the mids and highs are very nice. The size of the magnet on the mid is truly impressive. Will try to get some pics of the innards soon.

BTW, there was a typo in my post - meant "main system", not "mail system". I doubt I would sell these. In the past I have let go of a some nice Cantons and a sweet sounding pair of ADS L810 (which I regret).

Blue Shadow, maybe I'll list the speaker wire on the bay for big money.:D

Thanks for the link. If I am reading the sensitivity data correctly they don't appear to be all that sensitive

2 watts / 87 dB at 3 Meters

Not sure what the dBs would be assuming 1 watt at 1 meter (which I think is a more universal parameter).

Nice! FWIW, I've often read of the Braun versions to be superior to the ADS versions, which are still very good speakers, you did well!

So I tried removing the dust with a piece of sticky tape, and while some dust come off it did not make a significant difference. I am wondering if there are any safe solvents that can be used. Does anyone know what material is used on these components?

Thanks, can't do an ADS / Braun comparison but I am so far really taken by the music they produce.

As adam-ADS recommended, leave 'em alone. The sticky domes attract dust and debris and if you try to remove it, you'll wind up making it look work and risk damaging them with a solvent. That sticky dome design was intentional and if you mess with 'em you'll likely change their sonic characteristics. I know it's an eye sore - I have several pair of ADS speaks - but it's best to let it be as much as you want to make them look new again.

If it bothers you that much, there's a gentleman in AZ that will redome them for you but it can add up quickly with both mids and tweets.

BTW, congrats! Brauns / ADS speakers are great. :music:

dust

I wipe off what dust will come off. Damp rag at most. Then leave them alone.
I imagine it would be expensive or impossible to replace them if I screwed them up so as long as they play and sound good, I'm happy.

Nice speakers. Clean the cab and grill and enjoy!

BTW my ADS L710 are in my do-not-sell pile.

OK, I'm convinced! My main concern was that the dust would alter the sonic characteristics of the speaker. With the grills on it is not noticeable any way.

i have a pair of the ADS L810, but with the Braun drivers (very early series). the midrange also has the extended screw on the bottom of the dome. i've always wondered what that was for. also notice the midrange on these Braun drivers, they are huge in comparison to the later ADS verisons. anyone?

Thought you guys might like to see some nudies! Check out the size on the magnet on the mid! Also, IMHO, the cabs and general build quality are very good.

Did some cleaning with a damp cloth last night and the results are good. At the risk of posing a potentially sacrilegious statement, has anybody ever striped these whites cabs and refinish? Don't know that I will but I am wondering :scratch2:

Anyhow, once I deal with the grills I gonna get them in the house hooked up to some tubes :music:

Very nice.

I know that Dieter Rams did much of Braun's industrial design and most of it was white, black or gray. He did have some designs that were blue (cobalt?) and/or red (crimson?).

Google around for ideas but do whatever you want. They're your speakers.

What's the # on those mids? :scratch2:

I need to find a pair of those to fit my early series NOS L710 cabinets I bought from AKer stardust. The standard L710 mids are much smaller and won't fill the cutout.

Looks like 2 415 901 LC5. Here is a close up.

Interesting... i did a quick search on Dieter and I do like his designs. Think I'll leave em as is.

BTW, I'd love to get my hands on this:
