Trio (Kenwood) KW 55 questions

vintage rock

New Member
Hi. I apologize in advance if this is a repeat of other threads. I have found this receiver for sale at a hefty price on you-know-where. In the description, the seller mentioned a low level hum. Is this normal? If a fix is needed, is it hard/expensive? The highly rated vendor says he has checked the tubes, and cleaned the pots. I e-mailed him and asked about the capacitors; he replied he only checked as described in the listing. Go or no go. Thanks for listening to a newbie. Also, does anybody have any information, i.e. wpc, distortion, etc?

There are various sources of hum but in something of this vintage it is likely from the power supply filter caps that are in need of replacing. In any event, this receiver is of an age where it is recommended to check and update the components as necessary anyway for safe long term usage. So, you should factor into your decision the need to invest additional resources and expense, which will vary depending on what is found during servicing.

A recent thread on a similar Kenwood tube receiver can be found here: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=375737. If you do a search of this forum using the search function above you will find many other such threads and information.

If it's el-84 output tubes, it's probably 12-15 WPC. Are you comfortable with a soldering iron? You will definitely need to break one out to take care of the hum. For a newbie this would not be "easy", but may well be worth it, for the unit and for the education of learning to do it. Though if the price is "hefty", you might want to either find a restored unit elsewhere or a cheaper unit to learn to do the work on.

A539FC29-6C05-43CC-AA04-F199B9346FF6.jpeg Quick question for you guys. I have a Kenwood KW 55 and a pair of klipsh kg4. The minimum impedance on the Kenwood is eight Ohms And the speakers are rated at six ohms. Would it be a problem if I hook them up even though the impedance doesn’t match?
