AU-9500 restoration

tobyj17

Comfortably Numb
Too bored to sleep, so I thought I'd gather up a cap and transistor list for my AU-9500. It was purchased in non-working condition, so this should be fun :D

Here's all the caps I need (in no particular order) :

50v 1uf: Qty:3
16v 10uf: Qty: 2
10v 47uf: Qty:8
50v 4.7uf Qty:9
50v 3.3uf Qty:2
75v 220uf Qty:2
50v 220uf: Qty:2
75v 100uf: Qty:2
16v 470uf: Qty:1
6.3v 1000uf: Qty:1
10v 47uf: Qty:4
50v 100uf: Qty:1
25v 47uf: Qty:2
50v .47uf: Qty: 1
50v 4.7uf: Qty:6
25v .47Uf: Qty:2
25v 220uf: Qty:3
50v .22uf: Qty:2
160v 47uf: Qty:4

Main filter caps: 63v 4700uf
Qty: 4 (possibly upgrade to a larger size)

Misc: 80v 1000uf
Qty:1

Edit: There's two that I missed when recapping. 10v 47uf and 50v 1uf, both bipolar, two of each.
That's all I got for now, I've got a complete transistor list too, along with all the subs that I'll post later. Pics too..

I'd recommend getting it working before the recap. That way you have a base to work from and if you install a cap backwards it will be obvious.

A good idea from Pete there Toby.....

I used the same caps as I used in my AU-999, which were 80V 10,000µF BHC brand......

There are a few potentially noisy transistors in these amps too. On the preamp equalizer board, the one that is difficult to get to.....

Keep us posted Toby....:thmbsp:

Good suggestion guys, i'll wait to do the recap. The plan is to replace all the transistors, the last owner did some swapping between boards. There's also some missing..so to avoid the mess i'll just do a clean sweep.

One question, Are there supposed to be things missing on this board?

How do my subs look? I can't find a sub for the 2SK30A. There was one that I had a question about, it's the TR711/12 transistors on the F-2019-1 board. The one that's in the amp is a 2sa1313, and the service manual lists a 2sc1313. Anybody have an idea as to which one I should be using?

Looks okay, dont worry about the 2SK, its a FET, robust as can be and reliable......

There may well have been some circuit revisions, I think mine may have been like that, but I cant be too sure as I dont have it any more.....

The transistors you inquire about are 2SC1313......In this era 2SA were 3 digit numbers and 2SC were 4 digit numbers....

A good sub for the outputs would be Onsemi MJ15003.

Looks like someones been in there and possibly replaced some caps, those blue ones either side of the Elna dont look original......

I had to rebuild the EQ board (and more recently the driver boards too) on my 9500, I think I used KSA1845/KSC992 and BC550/BC560 throughout the entire board. Worked great, and these are very low noise parts. The amp is absolutely silent. Also used some polyester film caps (Mouser Part # 667-ECQ-V1H225JL) in place of those two 2.2uf 50v orange electrolytic caps which lowered the noise floor even further, and gave it a bit more depth to the soundstage as well.

Thanks for the info everyone, I'll get a mouser order in. Avionic's subs are probably better than the ones i found anyways :D

And yes, there was someone there before me. I didn't replace any of the caps. The blue ones look like some cheapies..so those will go.

The missing pieces on the F-2019 board, are those supposed to be missing?

If you order ksa733 or ksc945, make sure you get ksa733C and ksc945C or you will get transistors with base as center lead that can drive you crazy ...

Thanks. The closest I could find are KSA733CGBU..will those work?

You should always look at the data sheet for any subs just to make sure you are putting them in correctly. Luckily, Sansui silk-screened the pin orientation right on the boards so that + the datasheet makes it easy. If I recall, I had to bend a few pins around to make the BC550's and BC560's work.

Dear All
I have a 9500- works but sounds awful muddy
No treble just awful muddy bassy sound from both sides.
Following this thread suggests that it might need the full recap job. oh dear so many parts !!
Can anyone offer alternative diagnosis ? I hope not the transistors.
Thanks

Not totally sure on that, I'd recommend starting your own thread, you'll get a lot more responses to your question.

On a side note, I have been slowly working on mine..i've got a couple boards completed..but I haven't fired it up yet. Soon though!

Well, it's been awhile. A long while. This summer was insane. Two weddings, a baby on the way (here now :D ) projects kinda took a back burner. I was finally able to replace all the caps, with the exception of the mains and the other large black one. I just need to order some BP caps and finish assembling, and it'll be done! I chose not to replace ALL of the transistors, mainly some that were in place for others..and all the others that said SONY on them.

I hope I got everything installed correctly, I'll be using a bulb tester to make sure I don't cook anything.

I didn't take much for pictures. I'll have to take some and get them posted.
